My neighbor paid $1,400 for an 8-hour day to have a forestry mulcher clear roughly 0.75 acres of this stuff:



Problem is, it all grew back within 6 months because the mulcher doesn't get the roots, just shaves it down to grade level. I've got roughly 3 acres of this brush (pics are taken on my property) to clear over time and I'd much rather buy one of these 55" Wicked Root Rake Grapple for roughly the same price he paid for 8 hours of mulcher time that did not achieve the desired result. Yes, I'll need a third function as well but I'm thinking the grapple would become the go-to attachment for the FEL based on everything I've read on here.

I've got a rachet rake on my bucket now and I can push most of these over and uproot them. The really big clusters take some back-and-forth work and I have to turn around and hit some with the backhoe. I'm thinking the root grapple would be more effective at getting under them and uprooting them than the rachet rake, plus I can pick them up and haul to the trailer (no burning since I'm in city limits) instead of dragging them out manually.

Is the 55" Wicked Root Rake Grapple up to the task of pushing over and uprooting this stuff with an L3901 / LA525? I don't want too much grapple but I also don't want too little.

When's the next holiday sale?


PS: does anyone have a clue what this brush is called?

Is the 55" Wicked Root Rake Grapple up to the task of pushing over and uprooting this stuff with an L3901 / LA525? I don't want too much grapple but I also don't want too little.

We've sold quite a few Wicked 55 grapples for the 3901, but for pushing over and uprooting, I may lean towards the 54" longer bottom Wicked Grapple. The solid cross pipe will be good for pushing and the serrated tines should grab the roots and give you more prying ability.
If you had a smaller tractor like the B series which is lower in the lift capacity department, then ultra light is the hands down winner, but the 3901 is not that starved for capacity.

We chose the 50" Single Lid Wicked for my father in law's L3301. It's a very good choice as well, and less than 300 pounds.

This is an L3901 with a 54" single lid.

Clamping force is very impressive and these pics prove it!
