The cops come and my wife and I are standing at the side of the road and I have my arm around her. The cop just kind of looks at us and asks if we know each other! He took our licenses and papers and went back to his cruiser. I walked back to say something like please don't give her a ticket and he asked if anybody else saw the accident. I said no, so he said he couldn't give her a ticket (which I'm sure isn't really true) because you can't be compelled to testify against a spouse, so technically, there were no witnesses.

If I remember my Law and Order TV show legal training you could testify about what you saw happen but not what she told you.

Maybe, although I'm not sure how applicable Law and Order legal training is in Canada. I think the cop was just being nice given the circumstances. It makes sense not to be able to testify against a spouse because in essence the consequences will likely be shared (fines, loss of family income etc) so you are really testifying against yourself.

Gotta add my two bits: (where I live in Merryland, deer are a REAL problem, since they have suburban feeding stations everywhere, bambi lovers who fight hunting, and reservoir lands that harbor the vermin in great quantities.) but my story happened in Upstate NY- I was travelling into NY from Mass. in the Albany area one late fall evening in the 90's, driving thru rain down a winding, wooded hilly two lane, when a large doe appeared just in front of my left headlight. No time to do anything, and no place to stop. When I finally found a place to stop and report the accident, the NYSP told me there had been 387 deer incidents reported just that day in NY! Mind boggling damage and potential for harm. Please, hunt and eat deer!

Iowa might not be as bad as NY but I see dead deer by the road just about every day on 45 miles between my house and my workplace.

The deer infestations here are getting worse-- I'm nearly surrounded by a hunting preserve (that is, they HUNT DEER there, not preserve them) and a week ago there were 19 deer in my field, biggest herd I've seen. Seems like a combination of demographics (hunters aging out) and Bambi introducing Lyme disease has decimated the ranks of the hunters. It also helps that people decide they like trees and bushes not open fields and the deer love that.

Several deer encounters, but one somewhat memorable one was on a dirt road. The dirt road has a 90 degree blind turn at one point. One day, I drive by and a car has gone off the road down the slope, the kid had avoided hitting a deer as he went around the corner and trashed his parent's car-- no injuries, you can't go more than maybe 15-20, and 20 is pretty iffy. I resolved not to dodge deer on that road... 2 weeks later I round the turn and there are the deer sauntering across the road ignoring traffic (literally. Not a twitch from them as I rounded the corner). Very little reaction time to slow down so rammed one of them, pushed the old rustbucket F150 sheet metal in on one side an inch but headlight was fine so never fixed it. Deer disappeared over the hill-- and, I've never seen any of them there again on that section of road!

On a nearby section of road late one night driving home, saw a flatbed hauling off a motorcycle. Didn't think much about it till later a white cross appeared by the road (back then, someone put up white crosses near where there were fatalities). Asked a biker friend, he said two guys on their bikes were going through there, apparently a deer tried to jump the lead biker from the side and hit the biker's head-- broke the guy's neck.

I hadn't hit any deer in forty years of driving until I moved to Brown County Indiana. So far I've tagged 3. 2 does and an 8-pointer. I every case so far I've been lucky and there was no vehicle damage. I did break one of the does legs though. We've pretty much over run with them this year due to the mild winter.

They are pretty much considered cloven hooved rats for all the damage they do around here. There is a pronounced browse line in the woods. They are everywhere, but they seem to know how to disappear during hunting season.

Save the forest. Eat more venison. :licking:

I read in an article about deer hunting in local paper few years back. It said that the DNR had 50000 deer tags but there was only 25000 takers.

One replier noted 19 deer in his yard... I have counted 32 on about 1/3 acre of grass surrounded by trees. No surprise, because my 93 year old neighbor loves to see deer, and puts out about 10 lbs. of shell corn every afternoon to attract them. He claims to have counted 75 or so gathered at one time, happily eating his corn. No hunting allowed on his 40 acres. Having had Lyme disease, I would be happy seeing only the rare deer.
