Wife just added gasoline to diesel tractor. What to do?

I have to say that this thread is both a pleasant end result for SCUT and a very scary one on some of the responses.

I saw numerous post that the logic of what to do was based on conditions of operation from gas engines and 30 year old equipment. An ultra low sulphur engine of the last 6 years or so is vastly different than old tractors of 3 decades ago that ran on any Diesel laying around or kerosene or whatever. Just because the old GTO cars used to pour at in the carbs to clean them out doesn't have an iota of logic to what today's demand are. Or ether? ? Maybe if you're a mad bomber but not in newer Diesel tractors.

ATF in the fuel filter of a high compression ultra low sulphur Diesel. . . . Yikes. There are tons of things we did 30 years ago that can't be done in today's sensor rich engines.

I'm sure this isn't the first wife that has ever done this!

I think you need to take responsibility for *your* actions and quit throwing the wife under the bus. :D

As said today's engines have more refined injection pumps and injectors than a few years back as a result today's additives are made on the molecular level to bond with the fuel molecules for lubricity, cleaning and cetane . For this reason I wouldn't feel comfortable recommending anyone add anything else to their fuel.

I've heard of people putting gasoline in their fuel oil tanks, and blowing their house up!. gasoline is nothing to mess with. luckily your engine didn't get damaged by preignition..

I think we'd all have to agree that having a wife on our tractors is both a gift of partnership and a reason to have things very well organized so they can't get blamed for only some obvious things - like cutting over a septic field vent cap or running into the well pump casing. If they don't have to check the oil levels or levels it avoids them putting something where it it doesn't belong - just like in my case - keep me away from washing machines and dryers because I don't know the rules and fluids. I'm fully qualified to dump a load of SORTED clothes in and put the detergent and softner in from assigned bottles and hit start.

My point in this post is both comical but also reality. Women can do most everything a man can and sometimes do it better - but just as we can't assume knowledge they aren't given - they can't assume knowledge we aren't given . . . . well actually somehow - they "can" assume knowledge we aren't given but it doesn't work the other way LOL

Smart move would be to label the tank filler cap with "Diesel Fuel Only" painted letters. While not a big problem for me, my problem was always "gas with 2 stroke oil" and gas without 2 stroke oil". What I wound up doing is putting 2 stroke oil in the small 1 or 2 gallon containers. So now I have a Stihl trimmer, 4 stroke, and it needs oil in the gas !

^^Exactly!!!^^ Some modern vehicle manufactures recommend NOT blending gas or #1 for winter. The high pressure fuel pumps need the lube in the fuel and gas/kerosene both offer less lubricity. Grandpa's old tractor is much different than the modern "clean" engines.

On adding ATF to you tractor:

First thing is, folks this is 2018, not 1958. Remember the days when you put hardwood sawdust and chainsaw chips in you axles and transmissions to tighten them up and keep the axle from whining. Or add 90 or 110 wt gear oil to the engine to keep it from burning so much oil and to quiet down those old babbitt bearings? Or how about rebuilding the bottom end using harness leather to shim up old worn out bearings...I do! Then were the old trick of pouring soda can of water thru the carb as you raced the engine to do a at home valve job...done it MANY times. Over in town there a gas station and oil change shop and that guy took his drained oil and poured it into the top of a 55 gal drum stuffed with rags, that drained into 2 more 55 gal drums stuffed with rags. We used this oil in our ranch trucks etc. .15 cents per quart if you brought your own container or .10 cents in bulk of 2 gal or more. But back in those days cars burning oil was normal.

Do you really want to add todays ATF and its MANY formulations to your old tractor, I don't and I won't. Just bought my wife a new car with an auto trans...10 SPEED trans! The insides of an auto trans is full of clutches and belts and assorted stuff that depending upon the application needs unique friction lubes. V6 engine 195 hp 180 lbs torque vs Corvette paddleshift V8 750 hp, 750 lbs torque, wonder if they use different ATF...Ya think?

The take away is that what we did 50 years ago or learned from dad who learned from granddad just may not be as an good idea in 2018.

Thank you

Times have changed, remember how many thing we bought that on the package it said: "Universal Fit" and if you remember those days then you also remember what "Universal Fit" meant...Fits NOTHING in this Universe!
