Ok I'll give you the real true advise you need in this situation. Always test and retest before trying proving that you are saving money to your spouse. Even when tested and confirmed you still only have a 50/50 chance of convincing the better half that you made the right decision in the first place.

I feel for you man.

Johnny Law hit the nail on the head, you screwd up by not making sure your work actually works before showing it to somebody especially the wife:(......, this incident has been filed into her memory for her to use on you for years to come.

Anyway back to your tractor problem....pull the wires from the battery then smoked wires from the starter, replace all smoked wires and any other burnt connectors.
Pull starter, check it for short or just take it in and get it checked.
Check your ign switch for any burnt contacts, ohm it out, if uncertain replace it, check glow plug circuit, relays...etc

Good luck these things can turn ugly quickly.

I think part of the problem is that she still has a bad attitude about the 10k she was saving up for a face lift that I used it to help buy and excavator. I keep telling her she is so beautiful that it would be a tragic waste of money. She's not going for that yet. :D
Anyway, it looks like it's the starter. I have ground on that thing for long periods of time in the past to get the tractor started and I think the chickens are heading for the roost, if they aren't there now. I'll pull it and have it checked. The fried wire is the wire from the solenoid to the starter, and I am hoping a reman or an overhaul of this one may solve the problem. I will pull off more sheet metal and check out the switch, relays, and wires. I'm starting to figure this out a little bit, thanks to you guys. It's kind of like when you realize you are lost in the woods. You want to start tearing up some brush and tear clothes of on the brush instead of stopping to think

Regarding wife walking off. There probably wouldn't be any problem except that, like a fool, I made such a big deal about my conquering of the big diesel repair job, that she got the upper hand. I hate that.
Thanks for the replies. Here's my plan (done very quietly unless I solve the problem): I'm going down there and inspect and clean all the wiring and look for anything unusual. I will check the oil and see if I can bar the engine. I'll see what damage I did when I smoked it. I'll check fuses and breakers that I can find. I'll get out my brand new multi meter and check the voltage on the battery, and then I will disconnect the battery to keep it from smoking again, turn it to ON and see what voltage I get, starting from the key. Next, I will take the starter and solenoid off and check with battery cables. I will then take them to school and check them there OR to the local starter shop (I don't know what a Shucks is). Last, if all else fails, I will do what I used to do - take it to the local Kubota dealer and bend over. It will take me some time down there fooling around like the proverbial poodle and a football, but I will ultimately report to all those who kindly made suggestions. Without the suggestions I was like a deer in the headlights, panicked into complete immobility.

Shucks is the same as Kragen Auto Parts in your part of the country.

Am I the only one ROFLOL?

Belchos you are the man. I salute you, you have cojones of steel like your tractor. Not only do you spend the wifes savings to buy yourself an excavator, but to pen the reason on a public forum. Guts. In comparison I am a wuss.

I hope the wife doesn't come up behind you while you are reading this thread, she may end up kickin' you where it counts, then again it may just ring like a bell, or you may never get your tractor started.

LOL. :D

I'm agree with J.J., make sure you can turn the motor over by hand before you apply power to another starter. Many moons ago I replaced the tranny on my full size 4x4 blazer. Huge pain and I did not have it lined up right. Fried the starter and killed the battery. Oops, try again.

Belchos - I see that you live in Redding, CA. Schuck's is an auto parts store, in your area I believe they are called Grand Auto. Carquest, NAPA, Autozone are a couple other places that would have equipment to check your starter out also, don't know if they are in the Redding area or not.
