wife wants a dish washer

WayneB & windy acers are bang on - as well as the other comments.

We got a dishwasher about four years ago. Sears model: it has high temp, heavy pot mode as well as regular mode, air dry and heat dry. You can time it to go on with a delay - do dishes at night or when you go out etc. I am a pretty good handy man - electrical scares me - but I installed the unit in about two hours. Easy hookup to sink drain and water source. Electrical was easy - for me.

Now, if I was to do it again and had the space in the kitchen I would get two. They are probably cheaper than custom cabinets and you can fill one with pots and the other with regular dishes.

The install included new sink and faucets. But what I did was take a template of floor area with drain and water source and build the cabinet/counter off-site. I brought everything back and put it in place. I laid a slate top and added sink etc and finished once everything was installed - about two days. The dishwasher install was the easiest.

I was the manual washer for years. One of the best xmas gifts to the wife - also freed up my time.

Good luck - you will not regret it.

BOUGHT AND INSTALLED A KITCHEN AID 3 YEARS AGO IT IS QUIET AND WORKS WELL USING LIQUID CASCADE SOAP. A DISHWASHER IS NEVER BIG ENOUGH . THINGS TO LOOK FOR : ADJUSTABLE TOP SHELF,WARMER SCRUB TEMP ,WISH I HAD CONTROLS ON TOP EDGE OF DOOR,ASK FOR TALL TUB.LOOK AT LOCATION OF SILVERWARE BASKET TO SAVE ROOM.BOSH WAS MY 1ST CHOISE MABE IT"S BIGER. FOR INSTALIATION ALL YOU NEED IS HOT WATER AND A DRAIN ADAPTER UNDER THE SINK. 20 AMP SEPERATE CIRCUT.TAKES THE SPACE OF 1 CABENET DO IT I APRECIATE IT EVERY DAY

We thought it was a bit crazy that the house we bought had two dishwashers. Seemed like overkill at the time, now I wonder what we would do if we only had one. They are both stainless steel Kitchen Aid brand, seem to be well built and very quiet. Not sure were Kitchen Aid sits price wise with other brands. I would consider buying the same brand again.

Over the years, we've had Gaffers & Sattler, Kenmore, GE, Maytag, and now KitchenAid. If it were up to me, I wouldn't have one of those things in my house, but my wife doesn't agree.:D This stainless steel KitchenAid is most definitely the best and quietest one we've ever had.

I've never seen a non-commercial that you didn't have to wash the dishes before putting them in the D W .
The only feature that I saw worth a squirt was Sanitary cycle and that's only if you have baby bottles.

Well now, you can't leave the unrinsed dishes in the dishwasher to dry for a couple days before washing and expect them to come out clean. At least in mine you can't. That's sort of a pet peeve of mine.

What do you mean by wife wants a dishwasher. Doesn't she already have you? Or you could tell her she can find her dishwasher in the mirror. But that may start a fued.

We have had two Maytags. Both had failed controllers within a week or so of installation. Both fixed under warranty. The first one was going strong when we sold the old house. The new one.... Hmmm. The cheap blanky blanks put plastic wheels on the trays. These broke on the front left side of the basket that holds the plates. Happened within a year or so. I think the plastic just can't handle the wieght of the dishes when the basket is extended out of the washer.

I finally found a combination of brass nuts and screws at Lowes that fixed the problem. I had to drill larger holes but its been fine so far.

Less than $1-2 to fix something that should not have broke in the first place. Not impressed.

So I would look for plastic wheels and a good warranty. :D

Speaking of warranty. Our Maytag fridge lost a compressor. Thankfully we caught it before final failure. Not impressed. Lots of churn on the Internet about Maytag fridge compressor failures. It took a week to get the compressor here so the old one could be replaced. Since we bought from a local dealer he would bring out a new fridge to us to use if our fridge quite working. The repair guy said that Maytag had decreased the warranty on new fridges. Our is now out of warranty and if the new compressor goes I think we will just replace the fridge. I can't remember the exact price but we would have had to pay at least $500-750 for the compressor.

I would compare warranties on the different brands of dishwashers.

The reason we bought this Maytag dishwasher is that it has three baskets/shelves. The bottom most one is perfect for putting cookies sheets. The middle basket can also be move up and down for different size pots and pans. Other brands did not have these features at the time.

The dishwasher does clean real well. Not a complaint there. I think having a hot sanitzer mode is important. We do seem to use the different modes depending on how dirtiness of the dishes.

Being QUIET is very important to me. We set the timer so the dishwasher goes off at night. I want it quiet. Even during the day if we run it, I want it quiet.

Once you find a dishwash brand and model you like get on the Internet and see if there are complaints.

Later,
Dan

How much $ are you willing to spend ?? The more you pay the better the dishwasher. If You don't want to have to wash the dishes b-4 you'er disherwasher washes the dishes. I have a kitchenaid ( upper end whirlpool) I wouldn't have anything else. Cost around $600.00 5 yrs ago

Don't buy a maytag, spend 4-500,and get a good one, have the sellers[sears, lowes, etc],install it,and than if it noisey or something else don't work right, you can tell them to come back and fix it.

If your going to install it make sure you have all your water fittings tight. Never mine how I found out to double check this (Steve, what's that hissing sound under the cupboard, this was about the time the water started to run from under the cupboard door).
