According to his recent post, WVBill is going to favor us with some pictures of deer in his yard. I find myself looking forward to seeing them, and got to wondering if others of you have similar pictures to share?

Maybe it's 'cuz I'm still a suburban boy that I enjoy my trips to the property where I know if I go for even a short walk I'll run into deer, ducks, geese, rabbits, etc. Some of you have related some interesting stories of various critters, like moose, running about your places. I think we would all enjoy any of them you may have caught on film ... or pixels. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

I'm sifting through my own pictures and I'm disappointed that I've photographed so little of what I've seen (that wasn't orange /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif). On my last trip I was walking the back of the property to check out my culverts when I looked up the bank towards my neighbor's house and saw that I was being watched. Not as good a shot as I would have liked, but I call the attached picture "The Buck Stopped Here". /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

When you say "Not a good shot" do you mean composition or
that your too close to the house for a shot? /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

The deer let us live here as long as we pay the mortgage.
Seems fair...

We have deer, ducks and wild turkey around here all the time. As for photos, not sure how exciting a shot of my freezer would be.

Harv,
By the looks he's a young 8 pointer and knows the area well, and I bet he got a girl friend near by. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

If you want to have some fun and get some good pictures, {and its no danger to the wildlife at all} put up 12"x 48" mirror or so than zoom in w/a camcorder...you"ll get to laughing plus there will be tender moments.

Pete -

I forgot about the turkeys -- we get herds of them passing through all the time. Kinda stringy, ugly cusses. You telling me they're good eatin'?

Still looking through old pictures. Attached is a picture of a little guy I found while digging up the daffodils. Anybody know what he's called?

Harv,
I don't know what you call that thing,/w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif but there would have been some hooting and yelling also the backside of me running away if you would have shown it to me. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif
Yep..when it come to something like that or rats and snakes I'm what you call a USDA Chicken!! /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Oh Harv,if you were to BBQ a wild turkey you wouldn't want a store bought turkey ever again..yum..yum. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Yikes, Bill!

That's some kind of puddy tat! I hope you used a long lens to get that picture! /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

And thanks for identifying the Western Skink. I kinda like to put names to the critters I see.

MDBarb -

Now that's the kind of quality I want to get in my own deer pictures. But come clean, now -- did you shoot that one through a window? /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

By sheer coincidence, about an hour ago I shot the attached pictures in and next to my driveway down here in the 'burbs. I know some of you might be raising these things, but to have one wandering the streets in the area I live in causes heads to turn. Nobody is quite sure where he came from, but he has become the neighborhood mascot and has been around for over two years now. My kids are thrilled 'cuz he likes to bed down for the night in the tree overhanging our driveway.

BTW -- I notice the only picts posted so far in this thread are from California. What's up with that? /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Actually, we took it through our front window, but it was a 200mm lense. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

RE: your mascot: Some of our neighbors also have these fellows, and they seem to always be wandering around. We don't exactly live in "the burbs", but there you go. They make weird caterwalling at night sometimes.

That's because everybody else is on their respective tractors. It's only us wierdos in CA that are taking wildlife photos.../w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

While I was shooting the peacock pictures, I also spotted another critter lurking in the bushes nearby. I got as close as I dared to get the attached picture. I'm thinking I might start carrying a rifle, just for the protection. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

Hey, Pete! You got a recipe for these guys? /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

[Disclaimer: Rainy weather has kept me from the property (and my tractor) for nearly a month now. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif This thread is therapy to help ease the pain of withdrawal I've been going through.] /w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif

Gee, Harv, I've never seen one of those without the crosshairs being centered on it. What do you call them?

I'd take and post more photos if I had a digital camera. What do you guys think is a reasonable price for a basic camera for posting pictures here or emailing others? I saw a Fuji with 4.3 megapixels(I think that's mega and not giga) but I think that's out of my price range and maybe more for serious photography. BTW, it's been too wet recently to get the tractor out of the barn! /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif
