Hunting from a ladder stand with a black powder rifle over whole kernal corn on a ranch in central Fla.
Had a cow come to corn and start eatin it all of a sudden bout 125lb hog shows up stands on his rear feet hissing like a mad big snake and runs off cow.
I didn't fire at hog hopping bigger one would show up.Hog eats some walks off and I didn't see nothing else the rest of day. :(
That hog running off that cow was a sight to see !

Don't know about where you folks(lady's/gents) are at but folks around here mostly spanish like to cook up them hogs in something called " Caja China".
Means Chinese box in english.You talk about delicious ! :licking: :thumbsup:

We don't have any in south east NH, but there is a population of escapees from a large private hunting reservation in the southwest corner of the state. No license required, no season. All you legally need is an ordinary hunting license and permission to hunt the escapees from the preserve owners; which is readily gotten with a letter or a phone call.

A friend of mine use to give me feral hogs. He would tell me to put it in an ice chest with the drain open for 3 days. Each day put a new bag of ice on top of him. This would get rid of any gamey taste. Then we rub him down and smoke him.

Agree also !
Done lots of "free-range" hog hunting,only been actually attacked once,and that was when a Russian/Euro type hog(large) came out of a swamp area as I was driving down real slow down a dirt road. He came out saw me and charged full boar like head on towards a Rubicon I had with winch on front.I said to myself you really want to crash head on :D the hog veered off and ran in swamp.
A firefighter I know was knocked to ground while trying to put a male boar from a fixed trap to a portable cage.Received 154 stiches. :(
Only others times weve had hogs run by us or very near us have been when weve unintentionally cornered one off in palmetto head where to escape they had no choice but run at near us/me. :)
Now chasing hogs with dogs,capturing for live transport(tieing) or killing with knives is another type of encounter,but as far as one flat out attacking you(once again free-range) very rare and overplayed as others have stated.Just MHO.

this one was 427 lb.s (free-range) no fish tail either.They average around here 300 lb.s down(2/3 hundred pounders very rare)

Nice mount. If I can get a good one I intend to get it mounted.

Nice mount. If I can get a good one I intend to get it mounted.

The best(quality) taxerdermist shop around here charges :
$600 for a hog mount-turned or straight
$400 for a deer head mount
$100 for an X-wife head mount(no cleaning needed inside head) :laughing:
With a little over a year waiting list.

I don't know about the diet of a bear or what they taste like. I can tell you that a small wild hog, less then 100 pounds, is about the VERY BEST wild game that you will ever eat. They are lean, the meat is a white color, and it is full of flavor. You do not have to hide a gamey flavor, or season the meat to make it tast good. It's good just the way it is.

I've hunted in different places all over the Western US, Canada, Alaska, Namibia and New Zealand. I have deer and hogs on my land. I haven't shot a deer since I bought my land because deer meat is a challenge to make it taste good. I buy USDA Choice ribeye steaks. I like those a lot!!! I don't like deer meat unless it's ground into salami or something is done to it so it has some flavor. I like hog meat. I shoot half a dozen hogs a year, give or take.

I realize some will disagree with me, but I feel that for everyone who tells me how great deer meat is, they also have a special recipe for it to make it taste great. I'll take a backstrap off a hog, grill it and eat it without any seasoning. You can't say that about deer meat and mean it.

I imagine Eddie, hogs are just like deer and any other type of wild meat and taste varies by region and time of year. I have never had any wild meat that tasted as good as our sitka blacktailed deer especially the south end ones where there is no spruce. I have enjoyed it even cooked over a fire on a stick with the only condiment dipping into saltwater prior to cooking so it doesnt need any special recipie for my taste buds anyway.

Most places deer hunting occurs during and after the rut which really wrecks the meat in my opinion. Couple that with bad shots and poor care and no wonder a lot of deer meat isnt so good.

Brown bear isnt worth a hoot here in the fall but the same bear(well not the exact same bear) is ok eating in the spring while all the black bear I have eaten has all been fall bear and been great to eat.

I bet you have gotten enuff hogs off your place that you have a favorite time of year and way to get them and know how to care for them properly.

Generally agree as well. They are very quick to disappear and not be seen again upon chance encounters. It is rare for someone to be attacked by one. One notable personal exception to this is an encounter my dad had with a young boar around 15 years ago. He was out early one morning feeding and checking on the cows when out of the blue this young male charged out of the brush and attached himself to his leg. The pig only got denim and leather, never broke skin, but is was a good 10-15 second battle as my dad beat him about the head with shoulders with a working cane (think of a walking cane but much thicker and used for working cows) before it let loose and let off back into the brush. Dad is a game biologist but he never knew what triggered the attack. Nothing like that has happened to him or I since but it sticks in both of our minds. A pig is exceedingly not likely to be aggressive........but it can happen.

My biggest concern as I hunt them today is the chance of wounding, but not killing, a boar at close range and what it might do afterward. I've seen boars run at the first shot just like the rest of the sows and I've seen boars who wanted to stick their ground for a bit in an instinctual manner before ultimately taking off. None have ever come at me but that's what I wait to see.

65 hogs of various sizes ran across the property the other day. I gave my dog permission to chase them and she did till the big black one with the curling tusk turned around and chased her. They have never come after me and always run away, but after seeing that one go after my dog I'm getting a little nervous.

I agree, I have had deer meat that was delicious and some that was not so good. It just depends on what they are eating and the age and sex of the animal. I have no doubt the hogs would be good, but deer can be also. We don't seem to have them here yet in Southwest Mo. But I bet they are coming. just like them dern Texas Possums (Armidillo) that we never used to have and now are overrun with.
