Quick update on the 60" Wildkat rock bottom
grapple with teeth I bought for my
M5040. I was real worried about the weight of the
grapple, since it is extreemly heavy duty and weights 700lbs. It is so heavily over built I would expect to see this on the front of a dozer or backhoe. Well, I finally had a chance to use it this weekend.
Over the past year I cut hundreds of Ash Juniper (Cedar) trees to clear out an existing fence line, cut a new fence line through heavy brush and also clear brush for a road. These trees were anything from small bushes to 14ft tall with 10" trunks. Most about 6" - 8" diameter. I was able to use the
grapple to pick up the cut brush and start five huge brush burn piles. I piled up the first brush pile and then took the disc harrow I am using as a counter weight and disked up around the pile before starting it burning. (We finally had enough rain for the burn ban to be lifted and the ground was still damp and slightly muddy). I would then start the next burn pile and so on (These burn piles are all in sight of each other). The
grapple worked great, it is a little on the heavy side, but not too bad. I really like the teeth, I was able to to push over and then use the teeth to pop the Cedar trees out of the ground roots and all. The rock bottom also work well since I can see thru it. In picking up and moving the cut trees, I would use the weight of the
grapple to crush the branches of the trees down so I could grab more than one tree in one bite. Overall I am very pleased with the construction of the
grapple. It is working great so far.
