Re: Wild Turkey Huntin\'

If you want to hunt from your Rhino you'll need to get a large turkey outfit. I know the 'Parade Company' here in MI rents there's out after the Thanksgiving Day Parade. Mount the oversized turkey outfit on your Rhino. Drive your Rhino around in circular pattern, bob the head of the turkey outfit up and down while doing your turkey calls.

In order to be effective while calling, you need to bob up and down and walk around in a circular pattern.

I know this to be a fact because I saw the 'Champion' turkey calling 'twin brothers' on The David Letterman show! The visual is a very important part, as well as the vocal. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

On your geese issue. If the geese are landing in the pond and then walking up onto your island....try making a fishline fence, 12" to 18" high around the perimeter of the island. In my experience.... it's just enough encumberance that they don't cross it.

Dargo, is your rhino a white, black, indian or other type? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gifWhen riding your rhino to run them down, would you use the rhino's horn and spear the turkey or just have the rhino step on it? Are you riding bareback or do you use a saddle? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Don,

Now that's something I'm just having a hard time picturing...
A rhino has a horn pointing up, turkey's beard is going down.
Feathers on a leathery skinned Rhino?
I'd bet a rhino would look pretty funny with it's tail feathers out.
How much would this animal weigh? 20# or 4000#?

Like most wild animals, it didn't taste anything like a store bought bird. It was a totally new taste for me and proabably the BEST tasting bird I've ever eaten. I mean really tasty!!!

Is it possible to buy a wild turkey at a farmers market or something? How about being served wild turkey in a restaraunt? I would like to try it but have neither the time, patience nor money to take up turkey hunting right now. Is my only option to be very nice to a turkey hunting buddy?

Hmmm. I don't know. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I think we should ask Muhammad for 1 more forum. There's a lot of self defense and competition information out there but I'd like to see a site for my favorite. Unlike Karate or Tae-Kwon-Do (sp?) mine is pronounced "ching-ching POW".

A wild turkey is not dumb...they are very elusive and have eyesight that is very very good. They are far more intelligent than a domestic turkey.

Re: Wild Turkey Huntin\'

hummm;

I have 2 sepperate flocks on my place, together there is over 55 birds:

last weekend, I was on the tractor running by then If i had my 22 I would have had wild bird for turky day ! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif several BIG toms, one was a good 25 lber! they camp out in my woods, I have 3 different pine groves, and 10 acres of hard woods, they scratch the hard woods for food, and bed down in the pines. they keep the deer at bay on one week and then the deer chase them out the next. I drive the tractor with in 20 yards of them and have supprized them and been withint 10 feet! those were the YOUNG ones hatched in my upper field. I mow paths in there between the pines I planted and the weeds grew up 4' the young ones were grass hopper getting back in october and well if I was 18 again I could have cought one or two bare handed. I almost got a couple when they were about the size of a chicken which made momma really mad! lol she was clucking and chirping like crazy! while I chased em through the high grass where I could run faster than them, but seeing the litter bggers was hard! hahaha... they grew up and she had 9 total that staied with her and are part of the flock now.

Re: Wild Turkey Huntin\'

Anybody who's ever driven through Yellowstone National Park will see herds of elk along the roads. Big massive bulls that photographers use for wildlife calenders are common sites.

To think the elk in the park that are used to seeing humans, and have no fear of us, behave the same as a bull that is hunted in the National Forests, isn't reality. Animals learn fairly quickly where they are safe and when they are in danger.

I've seen good sized bucks stand on the other side of a fence on a ranch that doesn't allow hunting feed during the day without a care in the world. That same deer will cross the fence and become a totally different animal!!!!!!! Even animals in Africa have been documented behaving differently on one side of a river than on the other side.

Turkeys are extremely challenging animals to hunt in the wild!!! And also well worth the effort.

Re: Wild Turkey Huntin\'

Dargo,
I've been turkey hunting since 1968 and have been fortunate to hunt many different states; harvesting quite a number of birds.
To me, there's no greater thrill or passion than turkey hunting ! (re:hunting activities)
Turkeys are very smart and crafty; however , turkeys that haven't been hunted or molested much can appear pretty stupid.
IMHO, the only way to take a bird is to call them to you and outwit them . In many states it is not legal to shoot birds from a "roost". They are suprisingly tough, most use a shot gun (12 ga.) with magnum type loads. Although lighter stuff will kill them, the idea is a quick, humane head shot at close range.
I do know people that use rifles and that's fine where legal but I prefer the thrill of calling a "busted" flock back in rather than shooting from afar.
The National Wild Turkey Federation has done more for the population of turkeys in the U.S. than any other organization over the years.
I don't know if I can begin relate all my "turkey" experiences to you over the many years but they are a great bird and a tremendous "challange".
I'm not "preaching" but I do get excited about turkeys even when not hunting...
Good luck with the turkeys and best wishes.

Re: Wild Turkey Huntin\'

I had a freind who was addicted to turkey hunting. He once said that bagging a wild turkey was better than sex!! I asked if his wife knew he felt this way? He said "Heck man - I'm quoting HER!" Turns out she was an avid turkey hunter as well.
