Will 10 ply tires make my Expedition Rough

If the suspension is the same as the F-250's then they will give you a rough ride. If you plan to tow with it a lot then they will be a good choice but otherwise just get a good LT tire and don't worry about it.

I don't blame you for looking for used tires. I priced Mud and snow tires for my F-250 (265 70R 17's Load Range E's). The M&S tires were almost $900 for 4 of them. All Seasons were just a little bit less. Yet the 265 75R 16's on the other F-250 are about $100 less for 4:rolleyes:

They will be a 80 psi tire and the will ride like a truck.
If you are not towing just get a LT tire.
Usually a 10 ply will run about 30 bucks more than a LT

Can you even get a E rated/10 ply tire in a "P" passenger (NON LT) tire??

Okay gang, it sounds like I should pass on these. The current tires are just standard suv tires, I am thinking c's. I have been checking in with these guys every couple of weeks, and I am sure something will come up. I have looked at new tires, and the cheapest quote so far was $750 give or take, to much money right now for our spare vehicle. I really have till summer so there is no rush. This is my first vehicle with 17's, these things are expensive. These tires had around 50 to 60 tread left and and were going to run $250, so I was just curious.
Thanks, Dave

Man, so many replies. It is hard to keep up. To confuse the issue some, I do tow around a 6000lb boat in the summer.

added tire weight will effect the ride more than the stiffer sidewall. tire pressures have to get faily low before sidewall stiffness amkes a noticable difference.

I went up a few load ratings on my jeep, and didn't notice a change in ride, but I didn't run them at the new rated pressure either. The still lasted me 50k miles. not bad at all for mud tires.

Stiffer sidewalls make a rougher ride. Higher air pressure makes a rougher ride. And higher air pressure on wheels not made for that pressure can split a wheel, which I've seen done.

They never got the publicity that Ford and Firestone got, and it was a relative small number, but a number of 3/4 ton Chevrolet Suburbans in 1990-91 had a few tire problems with tread separating from the cord. The manufacturer claimed it was because the door sticker air pressure recommended by GM was too low. It's true that the pressure rating on the tire is supposedly the optimum pressure for maximum load weight. However, back then at least, some tire manufacturers said you could go 10% over the pressure shown on the tire, but to never go more than 20% below.

At any rate, there's no way I, personally, would put 10 ply tires on an Expedition.

I run a 2005 Expedition, have towed a 5,500# boat, and currently tow a 5,000# travel trailer and a 20' dovetail loaded from 5,000# to 9,000#. I probably have driven over 5,000 miles with one of these trailers behind my truck.

WITH A PROPERLY LOADED TRAILER, I have never thought of changing or otherwise upgrading my tires. The weight on the rear tires of my tow vehicle are well within the intent of their original installation. For it to be any other way would mean I have a fundamental problem with how I'm loading my vehicle.

In a nutshell, as an Expedition owner, I would never consider putting that type of tire on my truck. Just don't see the need. And yes, I think it would ride like crap.

I upgraded to D range tires (6 ply) on my 1/2ton and notice that the ride remains smooth, but cornering is genrally a lot more positive. The steering responds better and overall handling is better, especially with a trailer on.

My 07 Dodge came with 20 inch tires and wheels. It came with what I would call a street truck tire and I wanted something a little better in the snow and mud. The choices were very limited in a 20 inch tire so I swapped to 18" wheels and tires but with the same overall diameter. I got the exact kind of tire I was looking but it is a load range E. Once again I didn't have much choice, the E rating was the only one available. The 18" tires have a higher sidewall(the original 20" tires were a 60 series tire) but the ride is worse. I run only maybe 35lbs of air and the max is 80. It would ride terrible with 80psi in the tires and would bounce all over the road. In short the E rated tires I put on made the ride worse even though they have a taller sidewall, which in theory should give a little better ride.

Sounds good guys, I appreciate the input. It is definitely a no go now, I promise, no more second guessing.
Thanks Everyone, Dave
