Tiller Will a 9n ford handle a 5 foot tiller

If they have a diesel OR a 3-cylinder, they're aftermarket OR another barnd engine. No such thing as a 9N/2N/8N diesel from Ford OR a 3-banger Ford from those days

i guess its true what they say....you learn something new everyday. maybe theyre using diesel engines from Chinese brand tractors? ive searched on the internet and there are a couple videos from owners of this tractor. doesnt sound like a JD engine to me so i guess you could rule that out. maybe theyre installing a later model Ford diesel you think?

I ran a 5 foot tiller behind my Ford two years ago (32 PTO HP). Ran fine in 1st gear low range when tilling forward. Tiller would also switch to reverse tilling and I could not pull it in reverse... to much backword pull.

Mark, what model Ford? I don't believe a 9N had a high/low range transmission or 32hp PTO. I think the PTO HP was something in the low 20's (22 or 23) on the Ford 9N with only 4 gears (3 forward, 1 reverse).

Thanks for all these replies , fellows. Your opinions concur with what I also thought. I think this will help my cousin rethink buying a tiller until he can also upgrade his tractor.

The side discussions of the N series tractors have also been interesting. My late father had an 8N for years and it suited his purposes just fine. I used a Golden Jubilee for about 12 years, mostly for brush hogging, until I upgraded about three years ago to a Kioti DK 45 and several implements. It was fun then, but it is more fun(work) now, since I can do more things.

Today's tillers are ideal for todays hydrostatic or variable tranny tractors....match PTO speed with ground speed on any particular soil or surface.


For a 9N? I have an 8N and run an NAA.....neither really have the gear selections to match a good tiller for any given soil. I looked at a tiller for my 8N and I could make it work.....but a newer tractor would make it work much better. Even in 1st, I would be moving faster than many tiller apps require and would then need to make multiple passes. I may still do it just for the sake of being able to "till", but a newer tractor would make much more of it.

As for handling a 5' tiller, sure, the 9N can in terms of power.
