I tried seeding my new lawn last fall. Apparently I didnt put down enough seed and its very thin. Actually, some areas I missed all together. My soil is also littered with small rocks. If I can find one to rent, would a Harley rake be usefull for grinding up what grass I have? I imagine it would work pretty well since it should be able to solve most of my rock problem. Ive just never used one.

Yes a harley power rake will do what you want. It will tear up a new seeding very easily and also clean up your stones. First tear up the grass by digging down with the PR. After the grass is torn up go back over the lawn fethering the PR to smooth and kick the stones and grass off to one side. The PR will dump material to the non power side of the rake better than the power side (chain drive). Take your time, you will be starting at the bottom of the learning curve.

I second the above recommendations. We did our lawn last fall. It was probably about an acre, maybe a little less and we used 400 pounds of kentucky 31 fescue. When I posted that here many were amazed and claimed I used way too much seed. However, I now have a very nice lawn with only a very few small patches that need to be filled in. Many parts look as good as lawns that have been in place for years. After you go to all the time and expense to power rake your yard, there's no point in trying to save a few bucks on grass seed.

Totally agree on the seeding rate. Native grasses may be as low as 4 pounds per 1,000 square feet, but when you get into fescues, it's normally 8-10 pounds per thousand square feet depending upon the exact variety.

It's better to over seed than under seed because there will be some seeds that will not germinate, and others that are dormant until the conditions are "just right." The higher seeding rate accounts for the variables.

Your 400 lbs on an acre was correct for fescue. I just did a small area of 3600 square feet and used 34 pounds of mixed fescue seed.

I have a landpride primary seeder. I double seed by going in two diredtions (perpendicluar to each other) and put down between 9 and 10 lb/1000 sq ft. I have very good luck in seeding lawns with this procedurd. I seed 2+ tons of seed per year.
