Use White Oak oiled and it will last 20 yrs.

Chris

Hi Chris when you say oiled, something like linseed oil or actual engine oil? We are picking up a new trailer tomorrow with white oak planks on it and I would like to keep it for a long time. Thanks.

I used an Olympic outdoor floor stain in Ebony from Lowes...Holding up very well so far..The solid black unifies all of the colors, not that it matters much.

Around here we use a mixture of used motor oil from Diesel engines and diesel fuel. About 2 parts oil to 1 part fuel. We spray it on with a pump up garden spayer.

I would not do it till spring. Let the boards dry out. I do it out in a gravel lot in the morning and let it back in the sun for a couple days.

Will be slippery until soaked in. Sun sure helps with that. Recoat every yr or two if it will soak in.

We put canned bed liner on the bottom of a fishing boat, it stayed on for years. I would clean the trailer floor with Wolman's deck cleaner using a pressure washer to rinse, let it dry really good and put it on in several coats.

You are never going to seal up wood completely, at least on a trailer. The closer you get the worse you are because moisture will get in & never get out. Coating the top means its protected from UV & moisture sitting on top, but underneath it can still air & dry out.

I would use Restore or a similar wood decking type of coating. It goes on really thick but if applied properly, works well. It contains a sand type of material so it helps with traction also.

We put used motor oil on my brother in laws trailer when it was fairly new but the planks rotted out in 5 years. I don't know if he ever retreated it in those 4 years or not but it was mostly outside for the last 3 years. I used Thompson's water seal on mine and it also sets outside and so far no sign of rot. I have resealed it about every 2 years and it is due for another coat since water no longer beads up on it.

I am posting this update to let people know how things worked out for me.
I took the advice of my FIL. His recommendation was to use untreated pine and apply used motor oil every 6 months.

I installed the untreated pine and applied the used oil immediately. I have to say the deck looked fantastic the first few applications but eventually turned pretty much black. Taking his advice one step further I applied additional oil every 3 months.

I just came inside from removing my old rotted deck. Looking at my original posting date I see that the deck only lasted 3 years. I have to say that the screws came out much easier because of all the oil. The wood rotted primarily at the ends. The rear C channel held water for very long periods allowing the wood to wick up the water. The front angle iron allowed the wood to dry quicker but it still rotted just not as far as the rear. Even though I really slopped it on to try to get it in the C channel the water won the battle.

To be honest I probably goofed by letting the tongue stay higher than the rear which obviously drained more water to the rear.

My FIL has passed so I cannot really give him a hard time. But I did find out that he was applying used oil to an untreated oak deck that was given to him. Oak is not cheap around here so I am going with treated pine this time around. I applied Thompson water seal and after it has thoroughly dried I plan to apply a coat of Olympic 10 year stain and sealer I got at H.D. for $9. They have a mistake shelf so I picked up a gallon for cheap. It is an ugly color but I do not care. The instructions on the Thompson can say to wait 45 days before applying latex over it. I should have read the can first!

I am not going to get into a rush this time as I do not really use it as much anymore.
I did try applying a coat of roll on bed liner my neighbor donated to a piece of 2X8 I had laying around but after application the board would not slide into the C channel.

After new PT decking and other odds and ends I am at about $200 so far. If I had been smart I would have purchased one of those $500 car ports and saved myself this hassle.

And I still do not know if bedliner will adhere to a wooden deck
