I have a 2520 deere and a wonderful machine it is but my concern is how far on a slope will the thing go before it tips over. Feels nice going fowards and backwards on a slope but going sideways just seems scary. Is it just me getting used to it? Does anyone know what the limit is?

Thanks

Not sure of the exact degree before tip over, but most operator manuels say not to mowe or travel side ways on slope...go w/your gut feelings on slope travel...at one time here on TBN one could purchase a tilt meter.

Welcome to TBN :D! Most TBN posters and a lot of literature research paired with my own personal experience leads me to believe that tilt can get "real interesting" even with a tilt of 10 to 15 degrees when a tire encounters an obstacle and/or rut or depression especially with a loaded FEL in a raised position. Your own instinctual "pucker power" and/or sphincter control loss  is a good indicator of your degree of tilt. West Marine sells a Lev-O-Gauge inclinometer (~$14.00 US) which can "quantify" pucker power. I mounted one on my FEL upright post, but I usually rely on . Jay

A tiltometer sure sounds like a good idea. I will investigate one here in OZ. Unfortunately my gut tells me to back offeven around about the 10 degrees mark.

Thanks.

nails n glue: The more you use your tractor the more comfortable you will become, but do not get too comfortable. I start to  around 10 degrees too by the way :D. Jay

We have several steep hills on our farm and it does help to mow up and down but the scary part is when you hit a groundhog hole or a depression. Weights on the front are a big help in keeping the front tires from jumping up or when mowing the FEL minus the bucket gives you additional weight up front. Having a seat belt on and a ROPS is the way to go for peace of mind.

Go slowly, particularly in taller stuff that can hide an uphill mound or stob or downhill hole. My 4010 has that same feeling. Keep the FEL low and sometimes lower what's on the 3 ph to as low as you can take it and not drag. With the brush hog back there, it helps give some stability, particulary when its trail wheel is on the ground.

I've had the uphill rear tire go into the air 2 or 3 times with loads in the FEL. You can lean your body over that way if it happens, and you're going slowly. On my 4010, it needs at least 300-400 # on the 3ph to counterweight heavy stuff in the FEL.

The problem with roll over/tilt over is that when it happens it happens fast.
The center of gravity starts moving and when it moves outside the footprint of the tractor, over she goes.. real fast. Lowering equipment is a must in dicy situations as well as slow going so you can put equipment on the ground quick if need be.

Yep, your own gut especially when it is more conservative than you tilt meter! We are speaking of techniques to help alleviate the danger of tip over in the Hub Spacers discussion, Definitely put your wheels in the widest setting, look at getting wider tires, get the tires loaded with fluid (finding some used anti-freeze is pretty cheap)and if that is not enough, then take a look at hub extensions (~$700+). I have a couple of places in my yard that i clinch-up even going through vertically:eek:! So i am looking into a few things, including additional dirt to level it off in one case.:p

Ralph, i have had the tires occassional come up, and I did not notice them, and that scared me good when I found out - on a slope and did not even realize it! I think i might check West Marine for tilt meter, or use my inclimeter left over from my days when I put in my own C-band satellite dishes.
