Maybe a broad question, but I figured I'd get the best advice here.

I had a neighbor cut a small hay meadow for the first time this year. He says it has good potential, but needs to be smoothed up some. I've got a Kubota L3130 HST that I use to mow and do general chores with, but its probably not big enough to handle much pasture work. I've got two options to try this. One is a guy who rents pasture from me that keeps a big old tractor nearby, and I believe he's got a big disc to go with it, so I might try to borrow that.

Since everyone hates begging and borrowing, though, so I've been keeping an eye out for something that might do the job with my tractor. I saw a 6 ft ripper disc on Craigslist for a reasonable price, and wonder it it might do the job. Hard to tell alot from the picture, but it looks like it has the rippers in front, with disc behind. It would mean lots of passes/work probably, but I'm just brainstorming. I'll attach a pic of the disc.

The pasture is just about 7-8 acres, and not in bad shape, just bumpy. Luckily, the soil is a little sandy in spots, and not real heavy, or hard to work with.

Just wanting some opinions on whether or not the L3130 would pull this, and be able to make much difference in the pasture. No experience with discing.
Thanks.

I had a L3130 HSt,I think you would struggle with that disc. They pull very hard.I ended up with a roto-tiller for mine.Borrow or hire the bigger tractor.

You'd be OK in dry soil. Damp/wet soil probably not. Also, that disk you're eyeballing is essentially equivalent to a single axle disc. I prefer an offset disc (two axles in an "V" configuration) or a tandem disc (4 axles in an "X" configuration). You get a better finish (shallower grooves in the soil) with the offset or the tandem.

Measure the track width of your 3130 and then get a 3-pt hitch disc wide enough to cover the wheel tracks. I think you'll be happier with something like that.

Good luck.

Yes you can pull it if you do not try to pull it to fast.

The scalloped blades will help the disc go into the ground better but do not expect much in unplowed sod.

You will lilkely need ballast if you try to pull it in plowed ground.

As I've recently experienced, discs pull hard. Weight (on your tractor, of course) is your friend. Granted, I'm not familiar with your tractor, but today's CUTs seem to be a little on the light side for their engine power compared to the old iron. If you fill your rear tires and add weights to the front, it just might work. Otherwise, I think you'll just be digging holes in the ground with your tires.

Of course, this is all pure conjecture on my part, as I'm still pretty new to the farm implements.

Well, as luck would have it, my neighbor stopped by right after I posted this. This is the guy with all the experience and knowledge you could ask for about tractors, farming, haying, etc.

His opinion was that it probably would not work so well. At least, not up to the level I really need, and suggested I try to borrow or otherwise get my hands on the right equipment. (by the way, he has about a $100k John Deere, and I wouldn't dream of asking to borrow that rig, too complex and expensive to fix.)

We think the renter-farmer guy has an old tractor with an 8 ft disc, that should do the trick. He's just hard to run down.

So pay your farmer friend with the 100k tractor to come over and work the 8 acres. He will have it beat up in an hour.

He's "retired" and just plain tired of spending his hours in the tractor. He also has gotten rid of his discs, plows, etc, and just kept his hay equipment to do his own place. Did mine as a favor/payback for feeding his cows when he goes on trips.

Plus, I'm cheap.

Being cheap isn't always the best.:D The best way to hand sod is to kill it first and let it rot down a bit then hit it with a disc. If the sod is dead and the soil sandy then your 3130 will wear it out with a disc but keep in mind the 3130 is light and gutless. I was not impressed with the pulling power of it. If your not in a rush anything is possible.
