Tractor
none
Hey all, I'm purchasing some land and will need a tractor soon. 18 acres of mostly flat pasture with horses and some brush work. I've been looking at Kubota but can get a new LS of the same power and weight with many of the implements I'll need for the same price and a 5yr warranty.

Any thoughts?Thanks.

just some info. check into that warrenty. i spoke with a mahindra dealer about their 5 year warrenty, and the "5" years is just on the frame (which i don't hear of too many frame failures.) then it goes down from there. the engine/drivetrain might only have a 2 or 3 year warrenty on it. attachments (loader/backhoe) might only have 1 year warrenty on them. i don't know for sure in your specific case with LS, but just some info worth looking into for you if you haven't all ready. i think kubota has a 36 month warrenty now.

if you aren't going to use the tractor too much (ex: every day) the extra attachments you can get with the saved money on the LS might be the way to go. 18 acres is not too much to maintain with a tractor. i maintain 119 acres with a 30hp kubota b7800 with fel. that includes about 35 acres of horse pasture on steep slopes. i also use it in my business and it has been a great tractor. i use mine almost everyday and put more then 300hrs on it just last year. it has over 830 hours on it now and has given me very little trouble along the way.

with whatever tractor you decide on, you probable can't go too wrong. i personally think kubota makes great machines, but would go with the one that has a good dealer close by. you will need outside help/parts eventually and having a good dealer close can make things so much easier on you.

good luck and enjoy your new land and tractor when you get it.

I looked at LS before buying. Impressive tractor. Many extras included on their machines. Have read some comments about the fel not being as powerful as it was thought to be.

Bought Kubota as the B3200 fit my size and hp requirements.

Welcome to TBN, my preference is the Kubota, check with Messick's as he has some information on the quality of the LS built New Hollands.

Thanks for the feed back everyone. I have some time so I'll be able to do some comparison shopping. Who is Messick's? Is he a dealer in MO? I'll take any and all info about the importance of different aspects of the tractor (HP, Wt, PTO output, liquid tire fill...). Keep it coming!

:welcome: to TBN! Glad to have you aboard! As far as it goes, there are a lot of factors that will come into roll. In almost all cases, weight is an advantage with a compact tractor unless you are planning on driving in soft ground or on the lawn. HP, well a lot of us have different amounts of hp per acre to suit our needs best. The 18 acres you described sounds like the perfect job for a B3200 or the L3200 (correct me guys if the model number is wrong :ashamed:). As for tire choices, a more general purpose tire choice is the standard R4 industrial tire, if you need a tire that gives you more traction in the pastures I would opt for the R1 Agriculture tires. Defiantly get the rear tires filled with an antifreeze mix, the extra weight low to the ground is a major advantage for loader work and on inclines since it lowers the center of gravity. As far as a user friendly tractor, look into one with a 3 range hydrostatic transmission, it is as simple as a forward and reverse pedal. As far as brands go, I wouldn't limit yourself to just Kubota and LS, I would also look into a 3000 series John Deere, Massey Ferguson's line up, as well as Kioti and New Holland. With as many brands as there are, you shouldn't have a problem finding what is the best fit tractor for you.
