I'm new to tbn but grew up in a farm community. At least one fatality a year from tractors rolling over on to the operator. The difference when hauling with a chain is that when you encouter the obstruction it stops forward motion momentarily. That starts the chain reaction of the forward wheels raising and changing the dynamics and moment of the tractor. The part that we can never know is wether the chain slips the few inches that it would require to bring the tractor past the critical moment? I would just humbly suggest that something has to give a minimal amount of distance for the tractor to continue to rotate.

Did a little surfing on tractor pulling. General rule is hitch height must be no more than 1/2 tire diameter. They like 'em on two wheels, but not more than 16" in the air. They use wheelie bars.

can a tractor flip over backward when using one of those logging winches, such as the farmi, attached to the 3 ph? there is no power to the rear axle, so i would think it would be a safer way of dragging. any thoughts or experiences on this subject?

Same rule would definitely apply, depends on line of action with respect to rear axle. Too low will drag the tractor, too high will raise the front end.

It does sound safer, you could be off the machine, less inertial effects, etc. as long as you don't drag the machine out-of-line (sideways)....
