I have a 300DTC and brush hog, loader, rake coming and was wondering if the brush hog can be used on a lawn as well.Never owning any of the above maybe someone could shed some light on this.Be nice if I could use it for both applications. Thanks a lot.

A brush hog will cut a lawn but it will be very cude compared to a finish mower. It tears the grass with big heavy blades while a finish mower cuts the grass with sharper blades turning at a highter speed generally. A finish mower usually has more wheels and rollers to keep from scalping also.

My neighbors property is 15 acres, not all grass of course but a rotary cutter is all that he has ever used even around the house. When we purchased our property we started cutting with a rotary cutter and switched to a finish mower once we got the wild stuff under control.

A finish mower will give you a better cut, but again some do use rotary cutters just the same.

Some people cut thier lawns with a rotart mower.. but you need to put just a bit of edge on them... works -ok-, tradeoff is the sharp blades suffer a tad when you hit rocks when you use it for rough cutting.

If you are calling it a lawn then a brush hog will not give you anything close to satisfaction. That is what a finish mower does. I tried doing the same thing several years back and the initial results were unsatisfactory until I purchased a caroni finish mower. It really depends on what kind of a look you prefer but brush hog and lawn sound kind of like sherman tank and race car!

I think alot of it has to do with skill of the driver, and the tractor an bushhog in question. I used a realitively light hog.. a 5' KK, and a light tractor.. a ford 8n. With the blades sharp on the hog, and 1st or 2nd gear mowing.. i could cut a lawn to 2". Looked nearly as good as would have with my rider lawnmower.. nat as good.. but nearly. If the tractor were heavier.. or the mower heavier, I think there may have been issues. Also.. some HD cutters have large side skids that make gouging and scalping an issue, as well as not neing able to cut very low.

I have both a 5' rotary, and a 6' rear finish mower neither does a satisfactory job on the lawn we desire to look the best.
because of the tractor weight a TC-30, fel, loaded R4's
We use a CC lawn tractor 48"" deck for the front yard and about 50' around the other 3 sides of the house. Then I use the 5' rotary with sharpened blades for the balance of the back/side lawn. 300' by 550' cut weekly with this system,
I cut the back field 300' by 600' monthly with the same rotary cutter. RFM is just a backup for now.
