Winch on my trailer

Yes it has the free wheel out. I got mine on Epay for a 1/4th the new price. Found out after I got it even though it was brandy new in the box it was an old model. MM says nothing was wrong with it other than its an older version. New ones work the same.

Thanks mjncad!

Regarding Diamondpilot's question about what we pull with our winch setups, my answer would be "Hey, who knows?". I have no idea what interesting projects will come my way in the future, but in the past I have driven alone for very long distances to pick things up. I need the ability to drag just about anything up on the trailer without loading problems when I'm alone and no help is around. In fact, that reminds me that I still need to invest in a quality snatch block for extra insurance.

That sums me up too. I plan for the worst case senerio. Best example: Just my luck twice in the same weekend I went to move cars for family and friends that both had locked rear wheels do to brake problems, ( one had sat for 30+ yrs and the other something broke). There is where a 12K comes in real handy. I totally forgot about mentioning recoveries. A 3-8K winch might do OK on a free rolling load on a low trailer. But I've had senerios where you are trying to snag something out of the ditch or for some reason the wheels don't roll or something is rubbing badly. Thats why The winch and mount are as stout as they are on my setup. And I do have a nice heavy snatch block that has been used several times. Basically I prepared to drag it on if necessary.

I've got a total of 3-8000lbers of varying makes and ages that get moved around between my truck, tractor and float trailer. The trailer sits about 18" off the ground and I use whatever I need for ramps to provide clearance. I find that a fully charged battery and a snatch block (or two)has always done the trick. If the winch starts to load up or things start to bend, I find out why.
My loads have varied from a bunch of beech logs to 60hpMassey to pick up trucks and vans, with and without tires. Take it slow, watch for hang-ups then solve them..,.
