It was was brought up here before, something you might want to consider is a ductless split mini system.

Condenser sits outside, run a line set to your evaporator that can either mount on a wall, ceiling recessed (sp?), floor mounted or ceiling suspended. Can either go with straight A/C, Heat pump and one that even can use propane for heat.

Pros are that it looks really good, usually comes with a remote if the evaporator coil sits high on a wall, only have to drill a hole for the lineset to connect the units, you leave it in place, don't have to remove it.

The only con is that they can be much more than a window unit.

Have you considered having different zones set up by an HVAC installer? They are controlled by separate thermostats and the air flow is diverted by baffles in the ducting. That is if your current unit is adequate to handle it. You might consult a HVAC specialist about that possibility.

Wow, this is the 1st. I've heart of walmart selling a/c units. I haven't seen them in my local walmart yet. Will joe q public have to show a refrigerant card to purchase one of these units ? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif This will be interesting /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I bought one of those portable ac's, and it made the problem of heat even worse. the exhause hose, heated up and actually increased the temperature. I was so fed up with it.
We have casement windows, so its a big pain to put in a window ac. we have been looking at the mini splits, and larger systems. but then again our cooling season is only 3-4 months.
Any suggestions for a lower cost way to cool our home? we have bought the sunshades/sun blockers for windows and that has helped.
ps we live in an a-frame with a great room, and a whole house fan. the fan helps a bit.
