Xp can be setup to automatically log you in, but there goes all security. If it didn't make you login, then your IT people don't know what they're doing. Just because it makes you login, doesn't necessarily mean that they are tracking your internet access, unless someone has specifically stated this. Your Internet explorer will keep track of all cookies, sites visited, etc. but this can be cleared. Be careful though because you may think you've cleaned it all but MS leaves some little turds laying around out there that can bite ya.

If you don't want your activity tracked, then you should do that activity at home, not at work. I'm an IT Manager and deal with this every day. I really hate to get somebody fired for abusing our electronic services policy.

Good Luck,

One of the networks I support tracks all internet traffic by the nic number. Every nic number is unique in the world. It is all logged and the logs are stored forever, so they could, if needed, go back several years to find when any computer accessed anything over the internet. Then it is just a matter of tying a person to a computer at a particular time on a particular date. The user can clear the cache, eat the cookies, wipe the history, change the IP address, log in as somebody else, etc... it just doesn't matter because they can't change the nic number.

We don't go looking for abuses of the policies. It only happens when somone higher up tells us to start gathering information from the logs from a certain computer or user. Then, they usually just get a talking too and it never happens again. I'm glad I'm not in management. That would be tough. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

"What I am saying is I would like to view the internet from work incognito. Now every bit of time I view the net it is tracked, they can tell exactly who is viewing the internet and how long. "

Technically, you're stealing from the company when you do that.
Depending on you company's policies, Websurfing may be allowed during lunch or breaks, but not during your working time.
Internet usage during working hours should be very limited if and when you position (at work) requires it...if you're in Purchasing, for example.

I know that sounds harsh, but a company can lose a lot of valuable resources if folks spend their time web surfing.

Now...e-mail...just remember all e-mail... all e-mail...you send during working hours belongs to the Company, not to the user. You have no expectation of privacy using a company's equipment. Malicious or sexually provocative e-mail has gotten a lot of folks in trouble at work.

And, as far as government employees...they shouldn't have websurfing or out e-mail priveliges at work at all. That includes schools too, BTW. What brings up that point is, when reading the profiles of some members of TBN, I see .gov and/or .edu domains. No disrespect, folks..but those are my tax dollars you're wasting reading and viewing personal (i.e. non-work related) e-mail at work.
