Wing Plow

Beenthere : Yes, absolutely great job!!! From what I can see of the idea AND the fabrication,.... it looks fantastic!! CONGRATULATIONS!!

For those of us who use one or the other or a combination of both "blades" as opposed to "blowers", . . this would be a wondrous addition,..truly wondrous!

After a few plowings, and once that "windrow" is established as an edge to the laneway, . . . and the various temps have "solidified" it, . . . its pretty difficult to move it further back.

With that solid looking "wing",.. and adequate ballast, you should be able to take it down (either all at once or in stages,.. or steps,. or leave shelves).

"Best-case-scenario": ..is learning of a coming storm and having a nice sunny Sunday afternoon to get out and get that "windrow" moved back or topped off in preparation for next days big storm! That "wing" is made for that operation which we used to call ~~"Winging-Back"~~.

Yes, certainly, you are bound to need to tweek a thing or two as experience dictates, but that is all part of the game,.. "as-you-well-know",.. but eventually you have something extremely satisfying,... which is something we "all" want also.

VERY, Very,... NICE Job, . . thank you for sharing it with us! Good Luck !!!

CHEERS !

Thanks for the kind words.
This morning the wing came in very useful, as the 4-5' drifted snow needed some major moving back. I found I could get the snow up to about 6' and then couldn't get closer to lay a shelf off the top and push it further back. But this storm was not the norm.
Here is a pic of the more protected area of the drive skimming a layer back.
I'm real happy with it. Mounts easily and stores easily.

Very impressive build

Resurrecting an old thread here but it sure is interesting. It would appear that the sideways forces generated by the front plow and the wing would tend to counteract each other as far as tractor trying to rotate is concerned. Anyone else see it that way?

Edit: Perhaps member Beenthere will see this and shed some light.

You have it figured out quite right.
Using just the wing alone will tend to push the rear out, but dropping the front plow down to catch some snow does counteract that rotation.
I stumbled on that, rather than figuring it out as you did so well.

I see, after going back and reading all the posts, that you mention the counteracting forces in post #15 above.
Just another thought for the front end mount would be a heavy duty tongue jack in lieu of the sleeve and shaft. Second guesses, of course, are always easier.:)

Rec'd a PM for info on this wing plow. Disappointed that so far this winter there has not been a pressing need to use it. Last winter, just one time was all.

Thank you for the quick reply to my PM, and I am willing to share some of my snow! I need a wing like yours to make room for the snow that is falling now. I forgot to ask, did you fabricate the blade or buy it? I think I'll save some time and buy a used one. Thanks Again, willyC93

Had the blade fabricated.. was quite reasonable ($100 IIRC) but at first inquiry to the owner of a local shop that builds trailers, I was told they don't do that.. then as I explained more about what I wanted he stated that it would have to be bent several times and didn't think they could.
As I was leaving the shop, he said to his metal guy that they couldn't do that right?.. but the metal guy said "sure we can, no problem". So they did and came out real good.. of 3/16, instead of my thought of 1/4".

A quality build lives on.
You wouldn't know the approximate radius of the blade would you? The radius of the angles they rolled the blade plate to?
TIA.

I do not know off the top of my head what the radius angles are for the blade.
Tomorrow, I'll see what measurements I can get off of it.. and let you know.
iirc the leading width was 12" and the trailing width was 24" but will confirm that with some measurements.
So far this winter have not had the wing plow on. Close, but then warmer temps prevailed and snow nearly gone.
thanks for the kudo's..

The radius is approx 17.5", calculated from my measurements on the wide end. The chord from edge to edge is 23", and the segment from the chord to the blade is 2.75". There are bends every 1/12 of the width, so 11 bends total. Blade is 8' long.

Well after two winters without a need for the blade, this winter we've had a couple 7+ inches and have used the blade again.
Pic after the first one this year..

Since then (brother asked for a video) got hold of a GoPro cam and am in the "process" of learning how to run the GoPro, and drive at the same time. Fastened the GoPro to the top of my helmet but took the entire video with the camera pointing down too much and lost a lot of the effect of what was happening. So a redo is in order. Also, in the middle of a video of how easy it is to hook it up, and take it down.

Appreciate the nice comments, but this was one of those rare projects that just seemed to fall in place..

Very nice piece of workmanship. Your only limitation to the operations would be the overall weight of your tractor. However - your pic shows that the unit DOES move a significant amount of snow.

It sure looks handy. I'm looking forward to the video.
