WINTER FINALLY HERE

   / WINTER FINALLY HERE #21
I bought the RTV this fall and got the snow blade with hydraulic angle, cab, heater, etc. I figured that guaranteed it wouldn't snow for at least 5 years.:( We finally got a few inches late last week and I got to try out the snow plow Friday night. I've always used an open tractor with a rear blade in the past and it sure was nice to sit in the heated cab with a cold beer and plow the roads.:D
This morning it's -9 and they're calling for 1 to 2 inches of snow today and 3 to 5 more tonight.:D Looks like I'll get to play some more. At least it's going to warm up some - mid 20's.

BTW, my wife thought I was an idiot for buying the snow plow with the RTV because we haven't had much snow over the last several years in these parts. Now I've reached genious status in less than a week.:p Amazing how that works!

frank: I live in northern Erie county and had planned to go to my farm in catt. county near Little Valley this morning for a few days. I called my neighbor who usually keeps my drive plowed out, he said the wind is blowing so hard that by the time he gets the drive clear to the bottom, the top is already drifted in 3 ft. deep. I think I'll wait until the wind lets up to make the trip.

It has been a lot of fun keeping up with this snow recently. My friend finally caught me as I have been plowing out their driveway in town as I went from my house to one of the apartments. They kept trying to figure out who was plowing their driveway but they finally caught me :)

Ever since Sunday morning I have not had much luck, I put the new F-250 into a snowbank right next to New Era on Rt 5 Sunday night as I was trying to get to Derby to pick my daughter up. The truck wasn't damaged except for the running board has a small ding where I hit a highway marker. A nice guy with another Superduty ended up pulling me out, broke his one chain in the process. I did meet a lot of nice people that night though as I was stuck in the snow. One tow truck driver offered to pull me out for only $115 cash when I balked he dropped it to $80 but I already had called Ford's roadside assistance. Still seems kind of high to me but I don't know what people charge normally. Anyway, the next morning I ran the 1920 out of fuel as I wasn't paying attention (it was a little cold), well, the fuel pumps on our tanks are froze so I had to buy road fuel and put in it. Of course it was so cold the fuel didn't want to flow very easily to the injectors and it took a couple hours before I finally got all 4 lines bleed. The first three went fast, the last one was the pain. All in all it was a great couple days ;0 Have fun.

You got that right. We got 28" since yesterday. Almost 36" up at my son's house 17 miles NE of me. Plowed for 4 hours yesterday and spent 11 hours today with tractor / loader / snowblower and shoveling two roofs off. About ready to hit the sack now. I posted pics in toolcat thread but don't know how to link there so here they are again.

Ava is doing great. She has been wearing the Amish hat I bought for my dad and won't leave it alone. So now she has one coming in her size :) I would post a pic but I still can't post pictures on here. Some day I will get things figured out. Have you heard from Wayne? It has been a long time since I have talked with him.

I'm not in the snowbelt like you are but it's been bad enough up here. It's snowed and keeping the driveway open has been a chore. I do sometimes wish I had a B series tractor but the BX does ok if I take my time.

Dang Frank,I thought you were retired, for it seems your working full time on snow removal...thank you for the pics.

Watching the weather last evening, you folks are measuring storms in feet instead of inches...over 3 1/2 feet high and rising, maybe topping just under 5 feet before next Tuesday...YIKES.

Hey Frank did you hear about this kid??

February 8, 2007 11:20 am — After 36 hours of work, employees of Jim’s Service Center in Rochester last night hauled a mangled sport utility vehicle from the icy waters of Irondequoit Bay.

The 2000 Chevrolet Blazer that was encased in the ice of the bay for nearly two days was removed from the water late last night, Irondequoit Police officers said today.

“It was a monumental task,” said Jim Mathews, owner of the Jim’s Service Center. “I didn’t expect it would be as time consuming or as manpower- or equipment-draining as it was.”

The SUV was pulled to shore about 9:30 p.m., and was removed from the scene about 10 p.m., he said.

Travis Newberry, 20, of Rochester drove his SUV onto the iced-over bay late Monday night. The vehicle broke through the ice into 4 or 5 feet of water about 450 feet from shore. The ice was reportedly 9 inches thick there.

Newberry and two friends were not injured during the incident. Officers did not charge Newberry with any violations since it is not illegal to drive a car on the ice, said Sgt. Jonna Izzo of the Irondequoit Police Department.

Mathews said he was among a crew of 10 men who removed the submerged vehicle from the bay. He said he expects the recovery cost “will be in the neighborhood of $5,000” but he has not reviewed all of the expenses and has not drafted a bill yet.

A state Department of Environmental Conservation official said Tuesday that the owner was responsible for removing the vehicle and associated costs, as well as any fines that might be levied because of fluid leakage or other reasons. But DEC Regional Director Sean Hanna said today that the agency does not plan to levy a fine against Newberry.

“We kept a close eye on the situation; nothing or virtually nothing leaked from the vehicle” into the bay, Hanna said. “We’ve all made decisions in life that we’ve regretted. We think he’s paid enough for fhis mistake.”

Mathews explained that he and his crew used several methods to remove the SUV, while working in the bitter cold with whipping winds.

First, workers cut ice around the SUV with chainsaws, flipped it on its roof to drag the vehicle to shore, he said. But the vehicle – filled with water and ice – fell back through the ice.

The crew then tried winching; Mathews said they repeatedly cut 10-to-15 foot sections of ice and used an elaborate pulley system to drag the vehicle more than halfway to shore.

With 150 feet to go – workers again pulled the vehicle from the water, and dragged it toward the shore, he said. About 20 feet away, the vehicle again fell through the ice. Mathews said the crew again winched to pull the vehicle to land.

Mathews and two of his employees fell through the ice during recovery efforts, he said. No one was seriously hurt, “just a little cold.”

And, he said, dozens of people stopped by to assist – they held flashlights, moved equipment and supported the crew as they worked, Mathews said.

“We were so appreciative of the support,” he said. “It really made a difference.”

The vehicle, which weighed 4,147 pounds when empty, weighed over 9,000 pounds after it was removed because it was filled with “huge ice blocks,” Mathews said.

Sgt. Izzo said that the state Department of Environmental Conservation had been contacted and that she expected officials will would be in touch with the driver.

Agency officials were on the scene earlier this week to determine whether any fluids entered the waters of Irondequoit Bay. On Tuesday, a DEC official said the thick ice made it difficult to tell if any gas or oil spilled into the water.
