If your "sludge" is black and slimey looking it's not sludge but bacteria. The bacteria grows in the boundry layer between the water and diesel fuel. Pick yourself up a bottle of biocide (Power Service makes it) and add it to your fuel tank to kill off the little black slimey nasty's.

When Clorox kills bacteria in water, they are dead, bleached clear, but the pieces are still there. What does the Biocide do to the bacteria in diesel containers? Are they just dead and clear-colored or disassembled or what?
