Wireless Mouse/Keyboard

I don't think the age of the computer has anything to do with battery consumption on a wireless mouse or keyboard, does it? We have a wireless keyboard on an old 486/66 that sits in the basement, always on, and the batteries are well over two years old. Our wireless mouse, I believe, consumes no power unless the ball rolls or a button is clicked. As I mentioned, the mouse batteries seem to last 6-9 months. It seems I always change them out around the start of winter.

Not so much for PS/2 connected devices, but it plays a huge role in USB connected ones for the reasons stated above and improperly implmented power savings modes. It is also very device specific. Some will work happily with power savings and others will not. On machines with the problem it can also work fine with one device attached, but add a second or a third and it shows up.

That is what happens when you buy cheap...It does not pay...

Danny, I have tried taking the batteries out and then putting them back in and it doesn't help. The lights underneath the mouse are just totally dead. My computer is a Dell about a year and a half old. Running Windows XP Proffessional with SP2.

Mayby like Mike has said, I bought cheap and now feeling the results. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

And for those of you that said I had too many posts, please don't tell my wife, she thinks I am on TBN too much and you aren't helping the situation. Just remember TBN is about all I do on the puter. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have the MicroSoft Intelligent Wireless Optical Mouse.. not cheap.. but it goes through batteries too.. but work provides the batteries.. so I just keep a couple packs in my desk drawer.

So it is an optical mouse? That may explain the battery consumption. Mine are not optical, they have the track ball under them.

I now turn the wireless mouse upside down, batteries seem to last longer. I believe that the mouse is still transmitting with the mouse right side up.

thcri,

I have what sounds like an identical setup to yours, A Dell system about 1.5 years old, and I think a logitech wireless optical mouse and keyboard. It was supplied by Dell, but I'm 95% sure it's a logitech (I'll check when I get home). Anyway, I get about 6 months out of a set of batteries. I really like the keyboard and the mouse, and the fact that it can be dropped in a desk drawer out of the way of little fingers and sharp little eyes.

One thing to check, and I must confess I don't know much about this, is the light on the base station. When my mouse went dead the last time, I was confused and thought my computer had locked up. But then I saw the red light on the base station and realized my batteries were dead. Popped some new ones in and all was well.

I think your mouse is defective. Did you buy an extended Dell warranty?

EDIT: I just realized that I've never replaced any batteries in the keyboard. I assume yours is still working?

Got some rechargeable AA batteries for digital camera, the ones I had didn't last long at all. Ordered four AA nimh that were 2500mAh, old ones were 1300mAh. The new ones last more than twice as long in the camera, of course two of them are in the camera in the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico, bet they're still up. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif no, I guess I'd have to say they're DOWN
