Frank,

Actually a few trees is unlikely to prevent a good link. It depends on a number of factors, frequncy, power level, etc.. All of these standards work in the ISM band (2.4 GHz) or UNII bands (5.2-5.8 GHz) which are unlicencsed free use bands. You can run as much power as 20 dBm (geek speak for 100 milliwatts) and still be legal. The higher frequncy can suffer from multipath since several signals paths are possible by bouncing off of different structures on the way from the source to the reciever. Bottom line is you can make both work.

As far as changing technollogy.... thats a fact of llife. I still can't get over how much I payed for that Apple IIe with 128 K of ram, which would not even make a good boat anchor at this point!! /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Fred,
Ah, had not thought about the bouncing off of other things on the way to a remote antenna. Heck with the interarrival delay of the same signal, I'm surprised it works at all. The 100mW limit seems to be across the board on the 2.4G stuff we have deployed, although it depends on the dB gain of the antenna, which I assume your 20dBm notation means. Cisco's (Aironet) products have an adjustable transmitter now, which is nice when someone selects too strong of a dB gain antenna to prevent overdriving the receiver on the other side. Also, I'm sure the bouncing off of other objects is more of an issue at higher power levels. Finally the 100mW limit might be a FCC rule, but they sell 2.4Ghz 10W amps on the Internet, which I'm certain breaks many FCC laws /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif. Thanks for the info in any case.

Regards,
Frank

Its been a little over a year since JM III started this thread. Didn’t think I would need this information then. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif But now I have cable Internet installed and need to hook up a notebook at my office desk.
Neither computer has an Ethernet connection. But they do have USB and Windows 98 SE.
Anyone have experience on hooking up a wireless network with a Linksys 54 G or other system?
I have checked the different sites for information on this and other systems. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif But with all the great knowledge here on TBN I thought I would ask. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I just "upgraded" out network @home from a Linksys BEFSR11 broadband router, w/ Ethernet 10/100 connections via a hardwired CAT5E set up to a Linksys 802.11G router, w/ a matching 54G PC card to add my wife's laptop.

All I can say is it kicks. I'm sitting here surfing TBN, printing to the laser in the office, and listening to TwangCast on WindowsMediaPlayer while sitting untethered in the LAZBoy.

I average 50 Mbps, through several interior walls.

Cabled is good, but for me both have their place. The freedom of the wireless is too cool for words. Definitely a high-tech redneck.

Eric
I purchased the same system.
Took a couple of calls to Linksys to get both computers up and running. One of the best tech groups I’ve worked with. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
I didn’t know what I have been missing. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Cable and a remote card for the notebook, /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif what a change from a 56K modem and slow connections. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
They sure are going to make a difference in how I use my computers. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ron,

I know what you mean. it was a bit more gradual for us. We moved on up from dial-up (for us a 21.6K proposition as a result of the poor condition of copper lines out in the boonies), to Wireless @ 256K. This happened about a year ago, and the wireless LAN thing was this past weekend.

It is a slick proposition for those too far out to get DSL or cable. Our ISP runs it as a pay for what you want thing, varying from 128 to 1024K. You can vary the upload and download speeds independently.

This stuff is the goods. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

By the way, for anyone who is a real country music fan w/ a decent connection, check out Twang Cast.com.
