Wireless Security Systems

Just to stress this, I put an entire CCTV on my house and I went to the trouble of wiring it even though it was 10 times more work

Ditto this. I wired all my cameras even though it as a big pain in the butt. Some are wired ethernet, others are CCTV with power. I'm even going so far as to modify my ethernet cameras to POE.

This is what I have I got it from Samsclub.com Model: B-ZEDVR10-8600 Item #: 745356, looks like they have upgraded the cameras and hard drive since I got mine. mine has been recording animals around the house for over three years now and also keeping a teenager in check he could not lie about what time he came home or left. We went on vacation last year came home to find the top screwed off the automatic cat feeder so I pulled up the video of a raccoon taking the lid off.

What is POE?

Just one more thing to consider. There can be a big difference between "Consumer" type systems (Sam's, Walnuts, Internet adds, DIY stores, etc.) and what professional dealers buy from distributors like Tri-ed, ADI, etc. We constantly replace systems that the owner had installed himself but only lasted a year or two. Even though it was cheap, he now has to purchase another system and most likely will stay away from the cheapies. The "get-what-you-pay-for" adage can be most pronounced in the CCTV market.

Can my PC be used as a recorder, and just purchase cameras? :newhere:

POE=Point Of Entry or Power Over Ethernet-not use in this case.

In my case it is Power Over Ethernet. The cameras I bought were wired/wireless but required an AC outlet within 5'-6' or so and the places I wanted them - there are no outlets. Instead, I ran ethernet (cat5) to a jack, and will use the unused two pairs in the cable to run power. Keep in mind that doing so requires that you modify your cameras (voiding the warranty, though mine are older and well out of warranty so I don't care) to use those two pairs and to have a voltage converter as well. You can't use the original AC adapter as a long run of wire will drop the available voltage to the device and it won't work, so I'm using a higher voltage power supply and what's called a "buck" converter inside the camera to drop it back down to 5v reliably. Definitely not something for the faint of heart with a soldering iron!

Hi all

I posted what I was using in one of the other wireless security threads ... I use Mobotix M24M cameras but they are not cheap. They are 8 Mega pixels, 2048x1536 px. I use them for checking our paddocks & alpacas when we are not at the farm. I use Ubiquity 5 GHz wireless units to send the images back to the farmhouse and then via satelite dish back to my website - hence we can check from anywhere with internet access.
