I have never wanted or needed to be bequeathed anything. I'm not the one that earned it. Just the thought of "The Vultures Circling" waiting for my death irks me tremendously. Charities are looking better and better.
that SHOULD be totally dependent on what kind of relatives you have.. if they are not Vultures, then they deserve their inheritance.. giving to Charities should be the very last thought, because they would not benefit much as a deserving relative would, and you would have no idea of WHO the money, etc. would go to, they could be Vultures too!..

Why should anyone "deserve" an inheritance? I was taught to make my own way thru life. I was honest and worked hard all my life and believe my offspring should do the same. Sad to say, but none of them have my work ethic or share any of my values. One, I haven't even seen or heard from in over 10 years.

I expected 0 from my father when he passed because he really didn't have much. And since there was nothing, I got pretty much nothing other than some sentimental stuff.

I expect 0 from my mother when she passes. She has some. I would be much more pleased if she were to spend every dime making her remaining time as enjoyable and fulfilling as possible for herself. That would make me much happier than her thinking she needs to be frugal to ensure she leaves at least $X to me. Or, if she leaves it all to my sister, or to her church, or to her dog....I really don't care. It's hers to do with as she pleases. I don't understand the expectation that "my parents' money/wealth/real estate/anything is MINE when they die".

I have no personal inheritance experience other than when my Grandfathers Aunt passed she left her 1959 Rambler to me... I didn't have a driver's license yet but did all the oil changes and wash and wax jobs... she said take good care of your car and lo and behold she left it to me and I still have it.

Today, inheritances around here could be a million based on California Real Estate... kind of mind boggling when you think about it.

I also was given my Grandfather's wrist watch after he passed...

Nothing expected but gifts I treasure.

just as you took care of them when they couldn't do it themselves, that was caring, it should take an extreme upset in values to will away from your own Children.. remember, they are probably adults by now, and developed their own method of living, not everyone follows closely to their parents way of life, things change.. many times for the better.. it would be very boring, and actually bad for society if everyone never developed their own life style!..

I certainly benefited from the perseverance, fortitude and generosity of my parents, grandparents and great grandparents. I will be happy to pass on the benefits of that heritage to my children and grandchildren. I believe we have shown them that they should also apply the multiplier effect.

Some segments in our family were not of the same persuasion. One tried to specify that the inheritance could not be divided until specific conditions were met. Created a lot of friction in that wing of the family.

I hope to be adopted by a rich family before I retire

I got my grandpas Remington Targetmaster 22 rifle, I treasure it and from my other grandparents I got the family Bible that's well over 100 years old. It's hard to tell how many rabbits and squirrels he killed and we ate with that 22.

Only read the first 2 pages, but Broke Farmer John your doing the right thing. Good on you!!
The satisfaction (although slow) of watching those debts go away, one by one will provide much more satisfaction than any tractor, fancy new vehicle or toy. Your on the right track brother.
