Thinking about switching to WIX oil filters for my Kubota ZD 326 mower to save a few $$s. Has anyone experienced anything negative regarding a switch from Kubota to WIX filters?

Thanks

How many dollars do you think you'll save?

If I was going to use a filter other than Kubota, I would prefer a Fleetguard or Hastings/Baldwin. Top Quality. Then again, this produces absolutely no monetary savings, so..............

I have been using WIX on my BX22 for years. No problems. Main reason for switching is convenience to a supply house to buy.

I think if money is the concern, then the Supertech filters sold by Wal Mart are a bargain. I researched them a lot, and they are in the middle of the pack on quality and near the top of the pack on price, around $3.00, plus they are readily available.

The filter media is of good quality, and the relief valves seem better than average. I have used them on all my vehicles, including my motorcycle, which I am VERY PICKY about, and have had absolutely no negative issues. I use them on my tractor, too. About 325 hours using Supertech filter and absolutely no complaints.

I personally am not a fan of Fram or Wix oil filters. My personal opinion is that the Purolator Pure One filter is the best quality, but pricey and extremely hard to find. Well, let me add that I do like Wix AIR filters OK.

True Confession Time.
I have used Supertech filters on my wife's Honda for 11 years now. Nothing but. 150,000 trouble free miles. Change them at 4000 miles. That has been about 35 or 36 oil changes. So, the savings add up. The availability at WallyWorld is part of the ease of use.

All that said, I would have to own a fleet of mowers to attain anywhere near that level of savings. Perhaps the OP owns a landscape business and his filter costs add up. For the owner of one mower, with at most 2 filters a year, it just can't add up to enough savings to worry about which filter.

Last I heard, SuperTech is a fairly middle of the road, competent Champion filter, makers of a dozen brand names. Wix does indeed make filters for others as well, though, AFAIK.

SuperTech filters are made by Champion Laboratories who make Mobil One and Bosch filters and also some automaker brands. While they may not have the advanced filter media of the highest efficiency and highest priced filters, they are considered premium filters and will peform well.

A legitimate concern we all should have are the performance specifications. Some Car manufacturers apparently do not tell companies like WIX or Purolator their filter specs. So, these companies buy examples of the filter in question, have it tested in a laboratory, then build replacement filters to the same physical dimensions and performance. That includes filtration efficiency and filter bypass valve pressure. Thus, there is no reason to believe the replacement filters are in any way different from the OEM filters.

So in my $.02 's worth, buying the name brand manufacturer filters that have the same name as your equipment in most cases is probably just throwing good money out the window. In my case, buying a Branson tractor or Kukje oil filter for $12 bucks, or a Supertech at Walmart that looks identical, and apparently performs equal to the task is a no brainer.

However , back to the gentleman's original post. I believe that even buying Wix is better than buying a name brand filter for 3 or 4 times the cost. So if you want that Kubota filter, John Deere, Massey, Branson, or ??, then that is your informed choice.

so... can anyone compile a list of "other" brand filter #'s and what Kubota part #'s they replace?

The Wix site, and the Hastings site, both allow you find their filters for your Kubota, if you wish.

From there, a simple cross reference to Fram or whatever.

Cross referencing filters is pretty easy, once you have one number. Don't think anyone is going to "compile a list", unless they have been abandoned on a desert island with absolutely nothing else to do.:laughing:

Wix and NAPA are good quality filters but make sure that your warranty has expired to ensure that there will be no problems with a warranty claim.

You are not saying that you are required to use a particular filter to satisfy warranty coverage, are you?

As has been stated over and over, should, in the unlikely event, an oil filter collapses, the tractor warranty will not likely kick in, but they will point you to the filter maker for financial relief.

If that filter is an OEM filter, then, in the unlikely event that filter collapses, it is a "one stop shop" warranty claim. That's all.

Yes, some filter companies make several different brands. They also make them to that particular manufacturer's specs. Just because company "A" makes totally junk Fram filters doesn't necessarily mean they can't make a quality filter. Fram simply wants the cheapest thing that will screw onto an engine.
