Those of us of a certain age and taste in music may recall the song "Wolverton Mountain."

They say don't go on Wolverton Mountain
If you're looking for a wife.
'Cause Clifton Clowers has a pretty young daughter
And he's mighty handy with a gun and a knife.

I just learned that there is a Wolverton Mountain and there was a Clifton Clowers (although the lyrics take some liberties with the facts). Clifton Clowers : Bluegrass Today

I met Clifton Clowers Jr. many times. He used to hang out for coffee and socializing at Mack's Pines on Hwy 7 north of Dover. He was quite interesting to talk to.

A few years back after the scandal broke about Bill Clinton we used to tease him by asking if he was related to Gennifer Flowers and he would get a little upset and get a scowl on his face and sternly say "my name is Clowers, not Flowers".

Sadly, he passed away about 2 years ago. :(

At the least 1/2 of our church membership is related to Clifton Clowers. he was born 1891 and died June 05 year 2000.
A more loving quiet man with friends everywhere. would be hard to locate.
Merle Kilgore uncle was Clifton Clowers. and after writing the song sang it to Mr.Clowers who replyed There is some of that in all men.
Shortly after he died and his home was a museum of all years living on the mountain. and Sadly some one broke in and set afire . No fire dept in the area.

The road to his home still used by drivers stopping just to look.
Can see the mountain from our front porch.

Back then it was not country music per se. It was "Pop" ular music in the cities and in the country.

Another not to far away neighbor was Jimmy Driftwood who wrote and sang the song "The battle of New Orleans" to teach his school students history.
I always though the song "Good night Irene" was hard to get out of the mind on long driving trips.
