Wolves

I do a lot of predator hunting. Anyone who thinks that there is anything "easy" about hunting a wolf is way wrong. Its even harder than hunting coyotes, and by that I mean the eastern coyote. Plenty of hunters bought tags for wolves when they went up for auction and very few got a wolf. The season had to be lengthened until DNR got the number that they wanted to see.

There are many places where because of past interaction with hunters, using any kind of caller will just result in predators taking off. The only exception to the rule is usually hunting at night and using predator vocalizations to elicit a territorial response. But I'm not aware of anywhere where night time wolf hunting is allowed with a caller. That would be an immediate disqualification of any kind of "protecting livestock" type of defense. But it is allowed for coyotes.

The picture was probably taken with a super wide angle lens. It looks like the lens is only inches from the front paw, hence the distortion of the size of the head and the snout compared to the rest of the body and the hunter. Its a pretty old trick. Same as using a wide angle lens and holding the fish at arms length away from your body.....

That is an unusually large wolf if the story is true. 100# is a large wolf among the gray wolves 48 but have been known to get up to 150#. Gray wolves and their sub-species roam all the US, Northern Asia, and Europe. It does not display the common looks or coloration of the gray wolf; it looks more like a cross breed with a large black species of dog that has a wide face. Wolves will sometimes breed with dogs especially if a pack has lost some of its breeders and they need new genes.

I tend to think the picture is fake. They were smart enough to use a year when there as hunting season, as opposed to others. I bet that pic has floated around with some negative captions, and people saying awful things. Save Cecil of the Wolves. Lots of anger vile stuff wrote about the guy in the picture, who us probably holding up some deer.

Well stated post.

Maybe that wolf took down a few calves that were fed growth hormones.

We have a few red wolves in NC, VA, and up the Appalachians, a big red is 75 lbs or so. Very scarce and near extinction again now in a lot of areas.

This is why it needs to be managed at the state level. In midwest, they are from extinct. I don't think they should be either. But it should not be so common to see them. They need to be pushed back into the woods.

That looks like a cross between something other than wolf. I wonder if was a breeder that turned him loose.

Wolves range in color brown/black is fairly common. The large male that I've been spotting is classical grey with brown and black guard hairs.

A couple of years ago it was estimated that we have over 2400 wolves in northern MN. The wolves are now messing with ranching operations, and given that our industry is really aimed at vacationers, having wolves roaming around is a really stupid idea when we logged two attacks on humans last summer.
