had the same problem with the 997 i owned...dealer could not find an issue. i just dealt with it. what worked for me use to lower the hand park brake very slowly after starting. so slow that if it starts to stall, pull it back up. than try again slowly...it worked for me.

the control arms need to be out (in neutral) and the park brake on in order to start it. if you move the control arms with the park brake on...it will and should stall.

Can't see why your mower would stall just because you release the parking brake lever? But, if as you say repeating it slowly gets it to run and stay running, I guess it's a work around.
Curious if this only happens when the engine is cold/choked?

Agree. It makes sense that if one moves either arm while the brake is on the unit would stall out.

What's not clear to me from the OP is what exactly is your sequence, and exactly when do you experience the symptoms? For instance, is the problem the mower won't allow you to take your brake off and engage the control arms and move the mower, OR is it that it will start then die when you release the brake to move forward? OR is it when the engine is cold when you try to engage the deck/blades to cut, it stalls out?

IF its when the engine is cold or on choke, here's what I have to do with my Scag Wildcat with 61" deck. I have to apply choke to richen the mixture or the mower stalls when trying to engage the blades; BUT when it's fully at temperature it seldom needs to add choke to get the deck to engage without stalling the mower. I know this may not be your exact symptomatology but it may help you or others who have similar deck engagement issues and stalling to try what works on my mower....

Is this unit powered by a Diesel engine?

If not, what engine does it have in it?

Hello:
it's a 31HP (I think) Yanmar Diesel with electronic fuel injection - no manual choke. And to be clear, my 997 had this problem from the day I took it home - brand new. in my case, the engine started right up. have to have both control arms in neutral and park brake on/engaged or it will not do anything when you turn the key. once started, doing nothing but taking the park brake off...the engine would shut down. there seemed to be a critical point about 1/4 into the PB release motion that I needed to let the PB off/down very very slow. once past that critical point (you can actually feel it)...i was on my way. i'm not a big guy and thought it was the safety seat - maybe i didn't weight enough. However, I had the safety seat button (located under the seat) replaced but that did not change a thing. took it to the dealer (and this big guy) said "he could not make the issue happen...he said "I tried like 10 times and it worked fine each time". I guess I just assumed I was too light...other than that...a beautiful beast of a mower and no problems. loved that Yanmar

Thanks for all the good input. The unit has the 31 HP Yanmar diesel. The diesel has no choke. The engine controls the cold starting.
Thanks for the suggestions:

Here is what is happening. The parking brake is engaged, the 2 motion levers are in the neutral position. The 997 starts up wonderfully cold or hot. It continues to run until you disengage the parking brake. It stops. If you move the motion lever or levers one at a time each will stop the engine. You can keep the engine running if you immediately engage the parking brake, or if you tried to disengage a level immediately return it to the neutral position.

I have tried to disengage the PB very slowly but it reaches a point- I think when the safety switch is disengaged- that the engine just stops. I did the same slow motion with each of the levers one at a time and the engine stops.

I have changed all the safety switches, except the seat switch which is jumped and is works fine for years like that.

Any one have an electrical diagram? I have JD in the Netherlands, Ireland and England trying to locate one by buying the Technical Service manual. The US has no manual for the machine.

Thanks Keep the suggestions coming.

Is it possible the seat switch is no longer jumped? Meaning a wire has broken or is loose or not connected, that used to be connected? If it's NOT jumped it would be a open circuit; when it was jumped it was a closed circuit. So when you disengage the brake lever, the seat switch 'sees' no operator present because it can't read the actual presence of you on the seat, and when the brake is released it kills the engine due to it 'thinking' there is no one in the seat?
You replaced ALL the safety switches with brand new out of the box identical switches?

Hi: Coyote Machine Super Member:

I purchased the three switches from a John Deere Dealer. Two switches are the same- they have 5 wires connected to them. The third switch is different- the parking brake- it have three wires. All switches seem the same. They have different part numbers because one box has two switches and the other bag has one switch.. So yes they are identical switches.

The machine is an export machine from JD plant in the Europe. I purchased it from a County Government in North Carolina. Who purchased it via a bid.

I can not get a Technical service manual from JD as Europe who has the manual but can't sell it to me without going through a dealer. A dealer in the US or US

JD manual sales can not find the manual number in their computer system. JD US will not contact Europe on my behalf to get the manual part number because of JD USA administrative policy. Go figure.

The jumped operator present switch is jumped and it is hot- still jumped.

I appreciate your assistance.

I could try to get you a manual since my wife is currently in Copenhagen on her way to Berlin, then Portugal. If you give me ALL the specifications including serial number by a PM on TBN, I could ask her to see if there is a JD dealer along her route to snag you what you need...
