Wood And Thinwall Tubing Bar Joists?

The open, "industrial" look seems all the rage nowdays. Very few new buildings have finished ceilings unless it's a jewelry store or RxOptical. They just run things neatly, use all spiral ductwork and paint the whole mess flat black.

Yep, and a lot of them aren't painted now either. They leave the wood and metal look, like the first pictures posted, for even more industrial look. These new trusses look interesting. If you research them a bit you can see they are the next generation of building design with impressive numbers to back them up. Back to the first pictures, there must be some sort of additional materials above the metal shown since there has to be a decent layer of insulation. The trusses could be holding the prefabbed roofing panels that are multi layered and add structural support as well.

I'm curious how they insulate the roof when this appears to be the finished ceiling?

They don't. They raise the price of the 'food' to cover the money spent on lost energy.

Are we sure this corrugated steel isn't self supporting?

Are you sure that's not a false roof? If that's is the finished product (no roofing panels) its could be for aesthetics only and there is a true roof structure above it.
I gotta believe there something up there to keep the sound down in a commercial building.

Probably has foam panel(s) overlay on top of roof panel to make it "flat" for application of actually roofing materials, overlay on top would also act as sound deadener against rain & wind and insulates but allows a "clean" (architectural) appearance from blow...

They also have spray foam now that is made to go on top of the roof, right over the steel sheeting.

They spray a rubber roof material over that, and it's insulated, and water proofed.

I saw a large aircraft hangar done with that system, a few years ago.

For insulating and roofing.

The decking that you see is usually not the final roof. Usually there is about 6 inch layer of foam panels and then rubber roofing after.

Or like ray66v says that they spray insulation and then spray a silicone layer on top of that. It's a newer method.

No, the pictured joists are structural. I haven't had a chance to use them, but they're pretty common in spaces where the designer wants to create visual interest on a shoe string budget. That's pretty much the design philosophy for today's fast food restaurants.

Yes, commercial design is pretty much forced to place the insulation above the roof deck so we can call it "continuous". The last couple renditions of the energy code has gotten real strict on thermal bridging. For a roof, this is OK because the insulation will span the deck flutes and provides a flat surface to apply the membrane to. It's get a bit tricky when designing walls and definitely adds cost.

Yes they seem to be built as short term disposable boxes, wiped clean and rebuilt every 'x' years.
