Another thought for the beam, hand a sign on it. Or several signs on it to deflect what else it might be used for. Some of those old fashioned, metal signs would look real good up there. Maybe something horse related? or just that you love your barn? Johne Deere or some other tractor sign looks good in a barn too!!

Eddie,
Right below the beam is my 2002 NH TC40. Along side that is a 1960 18' Chris Craft runabout and next to it are two old three and four wheeled Cushman Golfsters.

I figure your barn is about 32x40? I'm thinking of building one the same size. My uses are garage and wood shop. I know everyone says go bigger, but I'd be interested in seeing what yours in layed out like and what you mainly use it for?

Not to critize your fine project... but it looks pretty lightweight to me. I've also found Grade 43 chain good for not much more than a heavy dog chain. I've broke Grade 43 chains just picking up a BB. And I've seen supported wooden beams (and trusses) that broke out with no more weight than a car motor or a mid-size motorcycle. Not a pretty sight, and expensive to repair.

What you have would be great for woodworking projects, but a new buyer surely would think that it's stronger than what you've designed it for. At a minimum, I'd remove the winch and put a disclaimer on your disclosure statement.

It's a nice project, but let's face it, your property isn't worth any more or less with or without the hoist setup. Take the hardware off the beam before you put it on the market and just leave the bare beam in place. If someone asks, be truthful about why it is there, otherwise just ignore it. You may want to add something about it in the disclosure, but it would have to say 'Not for lifting', period.

As others have mentioned, don't let your pride help you buy trouble. There is no upside to leaving it functional.
Dave.
