Wood Burning Stove - is it worth having

My friend and I (also an old person) once installed a converted propane bottle wood burner in a mates garage.

The three inch pipe was passed through the wall at a 45 degree angle and cemented into place.

We then lit the fire and checked for leaks in the pipe etc and tidied up the brickwork as it had pushed the cement ouit of placeand left the fire to go out.

Next day we found that the pipe had cooled down, contracted and lifted the fire four inches off the floor because the pipe was secured in the wall.

That pipe expanded when the fire was lit and we cemented it in hot, if we had cemeted it in cold what would have happened when the metal expanded?? :)

I have a wood burning furnaces in my house it burns 2 ft wood. That is my main heat source. I need a heater for my shop, it is 2500 sq ft with a 20 ft ceiling. With a pellet stove it goes out the wall and no real chimney a wood stove I would need 25 ft of insulated piping. The pellet stove is off when I leave. Pellets are less than $200 a ton. I get my own wood, for the house. I am not sure what I will install. I would say I am leaning towards the pellets!

That is a very good idea! Why didn't I think of that?

:D . BTW I hope you got some snow in this last storm that passed though Texas. And some more snow and rain in the future. (Not so much as we get though!)

Central Texas is a long way from Amarillo, and it's a good thing because we do not know how to drive in snow. Partly sunny, 50's, no rain, not even cold enough to light the WBS.

Burning wood is one of life's greatest pleasures. And, it keeps you toasty warm.

Love my Pacific Energy. It's the Summit model.

I am going to go with the Lopi stove for sure. I was just looking for advice with venting it out the back wall and price. The salesperson can talk about whatever they want... I needed some advice from people who actually did it and use it.

I know venting out the roof is the best but I just don't want to penetrate the metal and deal with future leaks.

I had a Lopi wood stove several years ago. Nice stove, no doubt. I had the Patriot model. Just a small stove but, it did it's job without issue for the 8 years I had it.

Only one word comes to mind... WOW!!!

It's official... zero burning in the 9 Bay Area counties for Christmas.

The Air Quality Management District has 70 highly trained wood smoke inspectors looking for violators... Fines start at $400.

The newspaper article went on to say that the Bay Area inaugurated the first Air Management District in the nation back in 1955 and little did anyone realize that one day it would ban the yule log.

The story also went on to say that those burning wood have indoor air quality 10 times worse than Federal guidelines and one fire is the equivalent of smoking 30 cigarettes...

Nothing was said about freezing during this cold snap...

When I was in Nepal, the people there burned fires in the middle of their homes. The ceilings and walls where covered in soot from the smoke. They also slept with their animals for warmth. It was normal to see goats, cattle and sheep inside where they lived. I was also told that most died in their 30's.

I can understand the smoke from a fire being bad for you, but I've never choked on the smoke from a fire in a fireplace or wood stove like I have just walking by a smoker. When I read somethng like this, it makes me wonder if anybody thinks for themselves, or do they just accept it and go along like sheep?

Part of the purported basis for the air management district's existence is protecting all the counties downwind outside the 9 Bay Area Counties... at least this is what they say.

The prevailing wind is usually On-Shore so the Bay Area generally has very good air quality... the complaint is the Bay Area Air accumulates at the foothills and beyond a 100 miles away...
