I am going to remodel our walk out basement and was wondering if it is possible to add a wood burning stove to a house. the basement seem like a good place. we don't have a fireplace and do have 13 ac. of woods so it would be nice to use the land that God has given us
any thoughst on this venture

Putting a wood stove in the basement with registers cut into the upper floors is a very effective way of heating an entire home. Assuming, of course, there's enough fresh air down there to support a fire or you draw from the outside. Disadvantages include the difficulty of lugging the wood downstairs (do you have an outer door, or is it dry enough down there to let it dry in the off season?) and the fact that a rip roaring fire often gets the house so hot men and dogs are driven outside into the snow in search of decent temps. (Few women complain about too much heat for some reason.)

I'd love to put one in my basement, but have no external access and would probably kill myself lugging loads of maple down the narrow stairs.

BTW: Another very effective way of distributing the heat from a woodstove is to put a ceiling fan on reverse to push all that hot air down and around. We use that arrangement in our rental property and it works like a charm! Can't use it in our 1860s farmhouse as the Wife claims it is not "traditional."

Hobby guy,

You may want to consider one of the outside stoves. They're somewhat more expensive but have a few advantages. One, you keep all of the dirt and mess outside. Two, you only need to load them once or twice a day.

If I were to add wood heating to my house, it would rank very high on my list.

I know two people who have installed the outside stoves (the kind that can burn almost anything). One uses it with a hot water heating system and has it installed equidistant between his house and his daughter's home in order to heat both homes. The other friend uses it with a forced hot air system. They both think the stoves are great.

This is exactly what backhoes are designed to do... make external access.../w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif...then you install your Bilco door...

our basement is a walkout with a large sliding glass door. I guess I would talk with a heating/fireplace company to see if one could be added in huh?

Yeah, but because of the basement arrangement, I have no free wall space down there except opposite the Wife's beloved slate porch.

"Honey, I need a backhoe so I can tear a hole right thru the middle of your porch," is not likely to get the desired results!

We're very happy with a wood/coal fireplace in the basement. With the door upstairs open the heat just naturally comes up. I don't really mind carrying the wood down and the ashes out....prefer that than buying LP gas for heat. One consideration in your case will be the cost of a chimney out of your basement. Your local agents will have ideas and prices. I'd talk to several of them and also buy a quality unit.

p.s. w/ this mild weather we're having, the fireplace in the living room don't get used much. Basement one is keeping the place toasty/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Maybe the reason is, because it drives the men outside./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
