Hi all,

I will be converting part of my woodshed into a small garden shed to hold tools and lawnmowers. I plan on putting a wood floor in with PT framing and plywood sheathing. I'm worried about errant oil and gasoline soaking into the plywood floor. Is there a coating anyone would recommend to help with that?

You could buy a gallon of roll on truck bedliner from Home Depot. It is gas and oil resistant.

yea, it's resistant, but can get pretty dang slick with oil on it ...

not sure how big a floor you're talkin about, but I've done pallets covered with scrap ply. When a place get's real bad, cut/replace.

I'm also a fan of packed 3/8+fines gravel for "floors" packed right, it's almost like concrete.

The oil and gas won't harm the wood. Is there another reason you are worried about it?
Maybe it is 'looks' ?

If not treated plywood, it will probably decay pretty quick from the moisture underneath.

Plywood is a good floor to sop up some minor spills. Unless you have a cosmetic adversity to stains, I'd leave it like you put it down. Besides, most bugs aren't big oil and gas lovers. Here's another option. Oil the floor right off. Tung oil or any other wood oil is more environmentally friendly than motor oil of course. If anyone asks, tell them it's a hand rubbed finish. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif That oil advice is better suited for for regular plywood. PT ply won't take oiling very well but PT is insect resistant.

Deck paint. That's what I used ten years ago in my first shed and it still looks fine. You can wash it with degreaser if you should be so inclined.

Thanks everyone for the replies. The woodshed is a lean-to on the side of my garage, 5 1/2' x 20'. I'll be walling off half of it (5 1/2' x 10') to be used as a place to park lawnmowers and hang shovels and such. I'll be walling off the woodshed part as well, but leaving the floor dirt with pallets.

Would I be better off to put in a concrete floor for the shed half?

Gravel. Preferably flagstone.

I have a wood floor in several out buildings and like them very much. The wood on the barn floor is much warmer when you have to lay on it in the winter than cement or even dirt.

Make sure that there is a chance for good air circulation under the floor so mositure will not rot the floor. Spills will not hurt the floor, if you spill a large amount of gasoline make sure it dries up before the place is closed up.

A house I once owned had a shed with a wood floor. The floor was fine and it seemed in really good shape, so I left it there for a few years until I was ready to put a metal one in.

When I took it down, I found several rat nests and dead rats under it. They had dug tunnels through the dirt into the open areas under the wood floor.

I've never wanted to build a wood floor myself, but if I did, rodent control would be a concern for me based on that experience.
