Wood Mauls

I prefer a fiberglass maul. I have 2.

I have a 4lb from lowes that is good for the easier to split stuff. You can split most stuff with it.

I have a 8lb from lowes I use on the tough stuff.

I accidentally ran over the 4lb maul with a truck load of wood and it did not hurt it.

I have also heard good things about the fiskars super splitter but some people say the handle is to short and if you are tall and are not careful you can hit you knee.

I am only 5' 10" (maybe less, I keep shrinking!) and agree with your warning for the Fiskars. I mostly split with the round placed on a block (which is actually just another larger round). I had a few close calls with the shorter handled Fiskars when I misjudged and the blade came down near my feet. I learned to compensate by making sure the axe was horizontal (i.e. break the wrists later) when it struck the wood.

The danger is much less with the longer X27. But these axes are potentially more dangerous than a maul because they are so sharp, and one tends to modify his swing to generate more speed.

I still use my shorterer, lighter Fiskars for small splitting at the shed. But it is not dangerous because I don't need to generate the speed necessary for splitting larger rounds.

In any case, your point is valid, and valuable. If you change to a Fiskars, observe how your swing's characteristics are potentially more dangerous than when you were using a maul.

I'll throw in my vote for Northern's Monster Maul too. Heavy, all steel, and indestrucable. The picture on that link posted earlier appeared that they now have a cast head. When I got mine, if you looked closely at it, you could see that the head was flame cut (saw cut?) from a very thick plate of steel. Another example of "they don't make 'em like they useta".

I also got a hatchet sized Monster Maul. Useful for making kindling inside on an unsplit stump.

I ended up with a Collins Axe 8 LB wood maul w/ wood handle from Ace Hardware for around $25 dollars and it works great!. I liked the "feel" of the Stihl wood maul but not the $86 dollar price tag.
