Wood Mauls

I have two, one is a fiberglass handled one, the other is a metal handled wedge type. The main issue is that the heavier metal handled on is too short! I just cant get a nice swing on it for some reason. I go with the fiberglass one, and keep a sledge hammer near by if it gets caught in a knot.

Before I had my hydraulic splitter, I used a Truper Rapid Maul. It's shaped like an axe, and swings like one, but has wings on the sides that make it wider while adding a minimum of weight. They're great for straight grained wood, but the weight can be a detriment in curly maple or yellow birch or such woods. They split fast though and you can get a lot more swings per day before you fatigue out for sure. I've had mine for about 6 years, and split about 65-70 cord with it before buying the hyd. splitter, and never ruined the handle, it's plastic on the outside, glas on the inside. Very secure to the head, looks like some sort of epoxy...Still use it from time to time when I don't want to pull out the big boy to do a little bit of work.

I've always thought that a good tool has to be a piece of art- if it doesn't look that way to you- leave it, choose another.

I got out this morning and although I didn't find a maul I liked I have narrowed down the search. The ones I tried today just didn't "feel" right.

I have the fiskars X27 and love it. On a wood butning forum else where a lot of people had good thong to say about it. And from experience the handle is very strong.

;)Always have liked good thong.

One thing I recommend for any maul or ax is this handle protector.

No need to place blame. Quebec has lots of world class thong. Just because your dumb phone jumped to the conclusion you were talking about the same thing you texted before a few times doesn't mean you are thong obsessed.

Over the years, I've used many products & still have most of them! I currently have a tractor splitter, which I use in hot weather or if I need to split a trailer load at a time. I have "standard mauls, wedges, a "Monster Maul" & an X27 Fiskars splitting axe. For most of my wood splitting, the Fiskars is my tool of choice! ~~ grnspot
