around here the folks use crude oil for the treatment of sheds, wood posts etc... i have not needed it myself, but seems to work very well, a lot cheaper than anything else you find, would not spray this near a stream, would treat the wood and let it dry before i put it on the bridge deck. they seem to need to retreat about every 3 years so they tell me.

Something else came to mind about using waste oil for treating lumber. Some of the old wooden fishing boats on the Great Lakes (the ones with the diesels that go "chunk-a-chunk-a-chunk" when they venture out at daylight) had their bilges soaked with waste oil to ****** rot. It must have worked because some of them are decades old and still functioning. However, imagine, if you can, what one of these smells like after being soaked in oil and then carrying fish for half a century!
