And they make CHEAP ones too. Have had nothing but problems with the Yard man MTD name. Just my opinion

I have a 1989 MTD,12 HP, 38 inch riding mower that has cut a 4 acre yard once a week during the mowing season for the last 11 years and it is still going strong!

EJB, I hear there are a lot of homebrew splitters out there from back in the old days (70's-80's /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif), built from plans supplied by Northern, et al. I'm not saying you have one or that it is not well built, but I would look hard for that nameplate. Not all welders are equal, so I would check it out thoroughly if it is homemade. The thought of all that force popping something unexpectedly is a little chilling.

Apparently many companies made splitters in those days as well, but most dropped out when the market dried up, a consequence of low oil prices and market saturation. Therefore they are now more scarce, though I have seen them at the box stores recently as some here have noted.

Still seeking alternatives to the most expensive (the timberwolf brand).

I have a brush hogg wood splitter (3ph) Id be willing to sell. Its about 7 yrs old but only about one season worth off work. all stickers etx are still very much in tack. I live in houston and i would take 500 dollars for it. I have remodeled thr old farm house and no more wood burning stove. Besides it just dont get cold down here for very long. Would be willing to make a trip to deliver it depending on how far. We like to travel... (would make a good deal on shipping cost)
