Wood splitter

The welding class is going pretty good. All I have done is stick right now and the beads are looking good for sure. I'm taking my time in each area, (flat welding, joint, etc.) to get it looking good before moving on to the next technique.

They are more expensive than going your route, but would cut down on the work putting it together. I haven't been getting a ton of free time here lately because of work. I figure I could take the overtime money and put that towards the splitter. Not as much fun as building it, but it might be better for me to practice on the smaller stuff for now anyway. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

J.J. s plate idea would probably be sturdier though. I'm just trying to find things for this trailer tow adapter I am making.

I will talk to my teacher in class tomorrow about it and see what he suggests.

While splitting heavy logs in the horizontal mode, you could add a fold up support arm at the end of the splitter.

I'm not really sure on the vertical/horizontal. I would like to cut upside down though. I like what Stray did with his.

That's a thought! the horizontal version weighs under 300 lbs. I wonder what a 24" piece of stock like that weighs? I will have to check that out.

I like the horizontal/vertical one. I think it can be used both ways. It looks easier to weld the attachment plate to the horizontal/vertical one.

I saw that one on ebay, but did not notice the trailer hitch type attachment, good catch!

I agree that I would brace the tube coming out of the adapter plate and also make the connector on the main tubes a little longer with more bracing. That's why I thought welding it to the bottom and side of the I-Beam (on the other) would create more strength?

If I used the Northern Tools version, I would probably relocate the valve to the side of the I-Beam so that it never ends up on the bottom like when I flip it 180 degree.

I just called the guy, (Don), and left a message for him to call me back. I am curious how much it weighs too.

Why not do what Stray did and mount it up on the dash of the PT and install some hyd quick connects near the cylinder.

You are going to smile at this, but did you know that they make a remote control valve so you don't have to be near the valve. They are not cheap. I have seen them in the Baileys catalog.

I will bring this to the front because many of this forums members had good ideas if one was buying everthing from scrach. I had a lot of the material for mine thus it didn't cost much. Read this over and if you have any questions I or some one will be glad to answer them.

Does anyone have a link to a wood splitter that works upside down? I saw one on the internet a while back but when I went to find it again it was gone. At least I couldn't find it.

It would be nice to split some on the heavy pieces on the ground without having to lift them.
