Wood stove for pole barn

I am with Pete and Grumpy on the double barrel heaters being best cheapest most heat of anything out there. Just make sure if using new barrels light it outside the first time the paint on the barrels will fumigate you.

I use a Hot Blast UL listed forced air wood burning heater in my shop these days because my insurance wouldn't allow barrel heaters thats another consideration to make fwtw. edit: Which doesn't put out anywheres near the heat a double barrel will btw.

That's a winner! I looked for a long time and paid $5 a sheet for used 4x8 polyiso and thought I got a decent deal.

What will you do for the ceiling? I put up metal panels and blew in cellulose, but the metal cost more than all the insulation. Make sure you put in a vapor barrier inside the insulation.

The coldest we've been this year is about 15 degrees, but I can get my pole barn up to 60 degrees or more easily with my medium size wood stove after adding the insulation. What I like best is that it holds the heat pretty well for 12 to 24 hours after I shut the stove down.

my new place has an existing pole barn which i have to think is insulated, with the inside finished with steel. 40x60 with 16' cielings i guess, since there's
a 2 14' tall doors. prior owner had a furnace, probably waste oil since it was a heavy truck shop, but i have an old wood stove available similar to a
barrel stove i could install but figured with the doors not being sealed perfectly and the windows not in that great shape that it wouldn't be worth
trying to heat. i won't be in there every day either, but, have wondered how well a stove would work. the shop has ceiling fans also!
i don't have unlimited wood, but can usually score a bunch of stuff if i look hard enough. oh and we are in a windy spot here, about 1500 feet
and that barn faces right into the west/northwest winds!

Me too post. We had a single barrel stove in our garage in Ohio 700 feet from Lake Erie. We used a fan to blow the heat around. A single barrel was toasty in a garage big enough to hold 3 cars.
