Wood stove.. How many members have this one ?

My cold air return is the same that the propane furnace uses. And is tied into the warm air ducts to blow heat. I have had this stove around 20 years and it works good. I moved it when I built the house in 2000. I would like to get a new one but mine is coal or wood and has a shaker grate the new ones doesn't have. I put mine in the garage instead of the house and ducted it into the furnace in the mechanical room next to the furnace in the house. I built the house with this in mind to keep the mess out of the house. I would do it again, I really like wood heat, much warmer. I do not filter the cold air return but wish I would have done it when I installed it.

QUOTE ("Hey David,
I sent you one PM before and was asking about air going back to the stove.
I just set it in the barn until I get ready to install it in the garage, then I'm going to hook it to my duct-work of my home.

My question is....Did you install a "Filter Box" ??

How did you install the "Cold Air Return" ??

Did you "cut a vent in your floor" for the Cold Air Return to go back to the stove ??

I've looked at your pictures in another thread, and I can't tell how you have the cold air return going back to the stove.

When I got my stove yesterday, I seen in the book that came with it talking about the "filter box" and the "cold air return," and I really don't know how to run that part of the duct-work.")Quote

Bill,

I was lucky to get your PM. This time of year I am so busy I don''t have much time to read TBN much less log in and post.

To answer your questions. I did not install a filter box. The filter on my return works fine. I did buy the return box that attaches to the back of the stove. I was going to make one at work but is was just quicker and eaiser to buy it from US Stove and the price was not that bad. I did modify it a little. The back of the box is open for the return. Due to how my stove was set and the way I needed to bring the return in I cut a hole in the side of the box and attached a flange to connect the return to.

I did not cut a hole in the floor.I have two returns in the houes for the heat pump. I cut a hole in one of the returns added flange to connect the flexable return "duct" to. The return from the back of the stove is regular "pipe return" until it reaches the floor joist then the flexable duct is attached. Since the return for the stove is attached to the heat pump return I added a manual damper close to the stove that I can open when using the stove and close when using the heat pump. I also added a damper to the force air part of the stove duct for the same reason.

If it would help I can take more pictures and post. If you have any more questions let me know. This stove works great.

I posted some old pics but will take and post news ones if you need.

David

Thanks David for the reply!

It looks like I may need to cut a hole in the floor to get the cold air return, and I will have to order the box or have one made.

I have a fireplace and electric furnace also.

So on the electric furnace, The way I understand it is that the furnace gets its air from inside the house, and then goes back through the filter and blower.. and circulates that way...

I should have taken heating & cooling in school instead of carpentry. :D

Thanks again David, ...I don't know if more pics will help.

You did a great job installing yours!

I have the #1600-g (I think?) that I also bought from TSC. I like it very well. Search by my user name and you'll see a couple of posts about my install.... might give you a few ideas.

Thanks for the reply!

I read your threads and you did a great job installing yours also... and They did a great job on the chimney.

The owners manual that came with these stoves don't give enough info.. But it did say "do not connect this furnace to a chimney serving another appliance.".. But with this stove I should not need to use the fireplace, because the stove puts out 119,000-BTUs, and that's more than the fireplace, and if I get it installed right then I'll have heat in all rooms... So I should be able to use the chimney with this stove.

I'm planning on putting mine in the garage also.

This stove is wood or coal too, and it will hold 26in logs or 70 lbs. of coal.. It also has a handle that you put on to turn the grate over to dump the ashes.

I do not filter the cold air return but wish I would have done it when I installed it.

Do you get much dust in your home from the stove ?

RD,

If the electric goes off then I could use a generator to run the blowers, and I could open the garage doors to help cool it down if I didn't use a generator.

But Thanks for your reply!!... and that would be something to check on and watch out for.

The questions that I had for anyone that has this stove was.

How did you run the "cold air return duct-work" ?

Did you install a "Filter Box" at the end of the cold air return ?

Did anyone cut a vent in the floor for the "cold air return" to go back to the stove ?

David (hunterridgefarm)was the only one that showed pictures in a thread, and he hasn't been online in a while.... So I was hoping that someone else had one of these, and could answer the questions. :)

I also have a fireplace in my home, but with this stove I won't need to use it. :D

I have a similar unit from Clayton. I installed it about 2 years ago and I think you'll really like yours. Mine is in the basement and run into the duct work throughout the house.

I didn't put a cold air return on my unit as it is somewhat out in the open with plenty of air to draw from.

We have a propane furnace as a back up and we've gone from using about 1500 gallons of propane/year to using about 100. ;)

Since I draw the cold air return through the heating system, there is very little to no dust. The mess staying in the garage and the warm cars/truck in the garage are a bonus as well.

I do not think they mean cold air return as it refers to combustion within the stove. In this type of heating system, you have a hot air supply duct and a cold air return duct. This is to create a proper circulatory convection wherever you want to heat. This keeps the heat moving so its dispersion is even and effective. This air circulates thru the heating chamber of the wood stove and not the firebox. It is called a cold air return but the air is never cold but the ambient temp that is present in the room where the duct is. I hope I understood the question and did not misconstrue my response.

Yea I'm sure I'll like it...I'll also be glad that I won't need to bring wood in the house for the fireplace. :D... and I hope my electric bill goes down some in the winter..For the past few year I used the fireplace & the electric furnace for the other rooms.

My father-in-law has a "warm morning wood stove" in his basement, and its installed to his duct-work... The first winter he used it. The electric company thought his meter went bad, because his electric bill was cut in half. :D.... and they came out and put in a new meter. :D

He came down today to look at mine and really liked it... But he's so tight with money. :D

Your stove really helped to cut back on propane. :D

Now another question... How warm does your stove get on the outside ?

I understand the return air now, and I knew the air wasn't cold going back to the stove.

The manual that came with this said that a "cold air return filter box" is required, and some say they didn't install the filter on theirs, so I'll have to decide if I want to install that.

I never did much work on heating & cooling....But to get the return air on mine I'll have to put in a vent in the house going back to the stove.
