BIG DOOLEY
Platinum Member
My collar around the cap of my pipe always gets coated/clogged with a black creosote.
Also around the top 4 or 6 inches inside the pipe at the very top where the wind cools the pipe off.
We pretty much smolder or burn our fire as low as possible all year. If we don't the house gets too hot.
I cut my wood in May, split it and cover it with a tarp.
It is very dry but our pipe temp is always low.
I removed the collar and just use a rain cap I made but I still have to clean the top 4" inches of the pipe a few times in the winter when it starts to draft slower.
I sweep our pipe 2 times a year and I can usually collect 1/2 gallon container at the most from the entire season.
