Blinds were given to us by mother in law, i didnt want them because i love the view.
I called a couple door places, they are having some special financing due to the tax credit almost being up.
Pella has some nice french doors that would work great in place of the sliders, with blinds in the middle of the glass, so we have an apointment with them. I hate the sliders, hated them from the time we bought the house.
been thinking of replacing the wood stove with a lp stove for a while, it may happen this year or next.

Propane is likely a lot cheaper where you are but I would look hard at the numbers before switching from free wood to $2.50/gallon propane.

I agree, around here i am paying 2.33 a gallon, with the ability to switch companies and lock in for a year at 2.05.
Really thinking about it.

install the outside air package to the stove. you'll be amazed.

Some suggested "Stop the air leaks first. That sounds like the major problem." ...think about what would happen if you actually stopped all the air leaks and then lit a fire! The stove and you would run out of O2.

Indeed, some southern mansions burned a gas ring in a dome at the highest point in the house ...generally over the circular stair...and the hot air rising and exiting the "chimney" around the dome would bring in an outside breeze at the lower levels of the house...

You can find similar instances where "solar" chimneys can be used to "air condition"

The windows and doors with blinds between the glass sure are nice. And expensive too. :D

We looked at blinds with the idea of getting the tax credit. We looked at Hunter Douglas and Custom Window Treatments from Comfortex. The blinds the qualified for the tax credit happened to be more expensive than the non qualified blinds. And the difference in price was about the same as the tax credit. Interesting how that worked. :)

The other issue we had with qualifying blinds was that that the blinds need tracks in the windows. The blinds fit over the tracks to prevent or minimize air movement. Great idea but we just did not like the looks with our windows. So we went with a blind that did not qualify for the tax credit but would look better in the window. I think the energy efficiency will be that big of a difference.

I wish we had the blinds this week. The temps are dropping into the teens again with highs just getting into the 30's for the first part of the week. :( The wood stove really cannot get the house as warm as the wifey likes when the temps get that low.

Later,
Dan
