I have one of those with the round handle, fortunately I don't have to use it.
I never liked or trusted it, it has a round handle and I was never sure of the angle the head was at,
I much rather prefer an oval handle so that I know the position of the head by feel instead of having
to visually check it constantly.

That's what I will have done but it was disappointing. I was working on some hard elm that I tried to split when I cut the standing dead tree last spring but it just went thud. So I waited until we had some good cold weather for easier splitting. Most of it was split when this happened while I was doing the largest round. Out came the saw.

What brand maul was that?

It looks like a hollow steel handle that probably filled up with water and rusted out.

Brave Industries out of Wisconsin.

It is a hollow steel handle but it was sealed - not even surface rust.

It looks to me like they started and stopped the weld at exactly the wrong spot creating a small stress concentration.

We will be building a new house in the next year or so and have been considering heating options. We most likely be installing propane heat but have been thinking about an outdoor wood furnace. While looking at furnaces I discovered there are outdoor wood pellet/corn furnaces. Does anyone have any experience with one?
