Our house has been woodburning for several years. There was a stain that goes all the way down the roof including some on the siding of the house. Since the siding and roof are now new I would like to keep this from happening again. The woodburner is an airtight stove type model. The chimney is brick on the outside with a clay tile liner. The cap is a mild steel open on the sides. I have photos available if that would help. Thanks to one and all with ideas.

Mark - Welcome to the TBN forum ! I think pictures would be helpful - You can upload them with the paperclip.

you must be throttling back your airtight stove, so that there is only a modest draft and the cap and/or flue pipe are too cool so you get condensate ...do you clean the chimney flue frequently? if not you might consider it ...if there is a buildup, it is quite the fire hazard.

Might want to change the cap to a style that lets the air out with less restriction.

You sure its from the stove and not black mold? Many roofs have that on. To get rid of it mix 3 parts clorox with one part water and spray it on with a garden sprayer. Might have to do it a few times, but it does work.

Thanks rgood for the tip on the paperclip. I had missed it. Here is the photo of the chimney. I try to clean the chimney once a month during season depending on ice. I don't think that I am throttling it back as it is the main heat source with up to (down to) -15 here in the tundra of Iowa. However I did have to drop the stove exhaust size from 10" to 8" to match the chimney. Our house is in the 2400 sq.ft. range so plenty to heat. Old farm house so plenty of opportunities for heat to escape.

This photo was taken before we bought property so whatever it is that is causing it has been going on for years. Also at this time there was a different stove hooked up than what there is now.

It looks like staining coming out of the brick - I know this is the wrong time of the year to apply, but do you think a brick sealer would help?

From the color of it I had wondered the same thing. One thing about SW Iowa we can get periods of nice weather (Christmas Eve night was -10 then by Noon on the 26th it was 62) so you never know. Thanks for your reply. What are your thoughts on the chimney cap? I am not happy with the draft from this stove. Anyone?

Does that cap come off easily - If it does, I'd take it off and see if the draft improves without it. Then you can decide if you want to buy a different one. The only downside I see to the one you have is it looks like birds could get in during the off season.
