Has anyone made a 3pt attachment from wood? Even seen one?

I was thinking I would make a sort of 3pt workbench or perhaps a carryall made from oak. There is a certain aestitic about heavy wood carrywall that appeals.

I thought if I made the carryall right, I could flip it over and use it as my portable, adjustable height, workbench ( or even a standing surface for painting higher areas). Being wood it would be light enough to handle, and it would still be strong enough for many applications.

Cliff,

That would look cool. You could reinforce the hitch pin area and the top link area with high gloss black flat steel and a deep oak finish on the carry all itself, would look as good as a wooden bed floor on an 'ol 68 chevy pickup!

I've seen a picture of an old Oliver Grain drill made of wood.. and the old rock sleds.

There is nothing light about oak!!! Wouldn't an aluminum platform be lighter and just as strong?

Oak is strong for it's size and takes abuse better than Aluminum -- though, of course, you are right that if you wanted light, aluminum would be better. But aluminum lacks the cache` of wood. At least that's what I'm thinking.

I was hoping someone had already done the design work on somehing like this or would have some pictures.

Yes, I hope so. That's what I'm going for. I will say though, I intend to use it, not just look at it. Oak looks good when it's worn.

I think I'd rather wear cotton. Oak sounds too heavy! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Seriously, I think you have a find idea. Make a nice platform to carry things on. Would be lighter than steel and would look cool. You should be able to just copy the measurements of a 3pt. carry all to get the right demensions. Take a trip to TSC or some place that sells them and take your tape measure with you. Good luck and keep us posted. John

Cliff,

I like wood a lot, but I think if it were me I would use the TSC KKK carryall as a base for the project. It is not that heavy really, and quite strong...and is probably even pretty cost effective at around $70 (just guessing, mine cost $69 a while back, but steel prices have been rising).

If you are like me...there will be the time when you need to carry a little more than last time and snap!... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Just a thought... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

PS...I forget who buy someone here made a landscape rake using a wood 4x4 to mount the tines to...later he replaced the two split 4x4 with a piece of steel angle...

If it was me I would put some steel support in there, even if it was hidden. Otherwise it would have to be really heavy once it was strong enough. Sounds like a good idea though. Put a nice stain on that oak and you have a nice piece of tractor furniture /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. Hook up an inverter and a TV and you got yourself a tailgating vehicle /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif.

seems to me I saw a post awhile back where someone made a carry-all out of wood that he used to carry his firewood on, try looking in "PROJECTS" looked pretty good.
