I've good an older Wooden Building with Masonite Siding. I recently patched a hole in the siding near the top right corner with a piece of Aluminum Flashing and repainted the whole building. I've noticed a little pecking here and there soon after I finished painting it, but just recently he is now trying to make a new hole on the opposite corner. I guess I could put up another piece of Flashing, but I would really like to get rid of him. If I catch him out there I have plans of scaring him off with a blast of my Shotgun, but wondering if there is anything else I could do in the meantime. Would a fake Owl help?

Any info would be appreciated.

I've seen the fake owls work really well -- but if your a bird watcher it wii chase off other birds also.

Just put something he doesn't want to peck there or make sure it doesn't make a noise and theyll stop. Otherwise youll still have the problem and a pile of dead federally protected woodpeckers.... I put foam in the areas i had this issue and now it doesn't sound hollow and they leave it alone.

I have redwood siding and have never had a problem.
my neighbor has a brick house with one side of his garage in T-111. they wouldn't leave his T-111 alone. holes were a constant problem.
He hung shiny aluminum pie tins on string from the sofit. 3 foot long string and spaced them 8 -10 feet apart.
they move in the wind.
hasn't had a problem since.?????????????????

I had one back in October did same thing, hit all the t111 indents under the 2nd story windows and one corner put a golf ball sized hole THRU the siding this is the heavier grade too! he is a little bugger and I popped off some round scaring him but he comes right back.. I think he migrated for winter as he has been gone.

I had the problem as well after we repainted to a light tan. I bought a rubber snake at the dollar store and nailed it up on the wall under the eves. Stopped the pecking. Also keeps the swallows from trying to nest under the eve as well.

You can bet them pecker-woods can be quit destructive if allowing them to keep on hanging around, several years back we had problems with woodpecker's as in (many) of them, The wife and I appreciate Nature and wildlife and try to live in harmony with all, at first we tried deterrents, hanging foil pans from the corners of the overhangs seem to work for a while, But soon they would become used to them and come back in a week or two, the time was in mid Spring season and after the Carpenter bee's would do their damage, by boring and implanting their larva into the overhang of my house, the wood peckers would then come along and rip away at the facia to get to the larva causing even more destruction, Now when something starts destroying my property it's On! and time to fight back, ...Booom! is the only way:cool:

We had a Red Headed wood pecker that would use our gutter downspout as a drum...

The downspout was on the same corner of the house as our bedroom...

My head was about 3 feet from said downspout...

Woody like to beat the gutter drum right around sunrise...

Seven days a week...

We sold the house and move the country.

:shocked::laughing::laughing::laughing:

Now we have Red Head and Pleated wood peckers all around us, but the house has no gutters, so we all live in harmony! :D:D:D

Get a cat. It will take care of the woodpecker. If you already have a cat, get a new one because that one is not doing his job :) We had a cat when I was a kid. Anything around that attracted much attention such as woodpeckers, mocking birds got ate by the cat.

Appreciate all the replies.

I'll try some of the tricks. I like the Rubber Snake idea.

We have 2 cats, but the Woodpecker is about 12 foot above them.

Has anyone else had any luck with a fake Owl??
